Help Removing Exhaust Bolts 4 Years, 10 Months ago
Hello again, I'm trying to remove my stock exhaust pipes and I can't seem to get the rear bolts that secure the exhaust to the frame out. I've probably got them a quarter way out and now they won't budge. I don't know if it is because of the locktite or what. I'm afraid if I try any harder they may snap and it's not exactly the easiest place to drill our a screw. Has anyone else run into this and if so how did you get them out.

Thanks.

spray some wd40 or nut bolt loosener on them and run them back in...
if you can see the bottom of the bolt hanging out spray some more there..
then try and get them out..Just did mine a few weeks back that worked.

I replaced mine a couple of months ago and I needed to heat the bolts with a propane torch. Melts the loctite. Just how I did it. Good Luck.

A little WD40 and some patience will go along way, bowhunter knows best.

sfdff38:

WD-40 is not going to work on those stubborn exhaust bolts. Trust me. I just did this in the Spring and actually broke a allen wrench socket in half trying to get those bolts out.

I put the flame of a propane torch on the bolt head for about 1 minute, using a small circular motion. The Yamaha loc-tite loosened enough for the allen bolt to be easily removed with a socket wrench.

Be careful with the torch! You've got paint and brakelines adjacent to that bolt!

Good luck.

he already has them moving so using heat can just be a little excessive at this point, if they did not move heat is a help, just have to be careful.

I just did mine two weeks ago and they came out just fine...no heat...no WD-40.

Just be careful not to strip the bolt.

I'd try the WD40 since you have them moving. Spray...cycle in and out...repeat. Each time you come back out they should give a bit more.

Post edited by: Katana, at: 2007/07/20 15:21

If you can get your hands on some PB Blaster, it really puts WD40 to shame. WD40 has a lot of really good uses, but stubborn bolts get PB around this garage. Here's another suggestion that has worked for many years for me. After the penetrating oil is on, try running the bolt back in some. Work it back and forth. I didn't need heat, but I needed elbow grease, and the right tools. Hope this helps,BB.

Sorry Katana, I see you covered that, I read too quickly.

Post edited by: Big Bear, at: 2007/07/20 15:36

Thands for all the input guys. A little WD-40, elbow grease, and patience did the trick. The patience part is usually what kills me.

Thanks again.
