Big David, I don't mean to steal your thunder. I too wanted the mat black/flamed Mean Streak.

At the time, I was riding an 04' Suzuki Volusha and went to the Suzuki shop to check out the mean streak. When I saw the Mean Streak up close, I wasn't impressed.

The Sukuzi shop had a big black bike in the center of the floor, that caught my eye. I walked around it a few times and instantly fell in love with it. The dealer told me that it was a 2005 Yamaha Roadstar. Someone had traded it in (this was in 06' and it had about 2K miles on it) I asked, "what's a Roadstar". A day later, I came back and bought it.

A few days later, I brought the bike back to the shop because I assumed something was wrong with it. When I started it up, it was so loud and the bike shook like crazy(remember, I previously owned a Suzuki Volusha). The guys in the shop laughed at me and said, "welcome to the world of the V-Twin"

i was looking at the vtx 1300 and 1800, v-star 1300, road star 1600 and 1700, and a hd cvo street glide. so how i made my choice was, street glide 30k without any goodies--your out, v-star 1300--lack of chromey goodness to put on and liqiud cooled--your out, and the vtx's have a large assortment of goodies but were liquid cooled--so that left me with the road star, and what a good choice i made

I was all set to buy a '98 Moto Guzzi California Special with only 9000 miles on it when I came across a brand new year old Road Star Midnight Silverado for $8999 on the 'net. I owned a Yamaha XS 850 for 25 years as well as other Yamaha products and was familiar with the durability that Yamaha is famous for so I drove 250 miles to the dealer in the Twin Cities and bought the Road Star w/o even taking it, or any other Road Star, for a a test ride. I knew I was getting a great deal and that Yamaha made a great bike so I hauled her home, then took a test ride. I've been very happy with my decision from the first time I let out the clutch.

It really was not a hard choice. I started riding a v-star 1100, because I liked the look. But after a couple of years it just did not have enough high end.(speed) So I started test driving everything. One thing I stayed away from was "advertising....image" . I do not want an "life style" (harley).I want a bike that I enjoy to ride. My friend is a dye hard Harley guy. So we went to the Harley shop and looked at all the after market parts made in every country except ours. I also asked the Harley sales person what percent of parts were made in the USA. He would not answer. Harley does not advertise "made in the usa" in any advertisement that I have ever seen.

Victory bikes look great but ride to high up, Harley`s seem kind of doggy from the factory and if I am going to spend 17,000 dollars I expect performance, Honda`s .....(you meet the nicest people on a honda) can not get the advertisement out of my head ...enough said!!! Kawasaki ...I liked the look of the vulcan 2000, but they are hard to find used. After riding everything I could get my hands on, I met the Roadstar. I was instantly impressed Smooth and powerful. It has everything! The only problem I have is everyone thinks it is a Harley...I think I will have to put the emblem back on it!

As always, started with HD Road King. And, as always, left the dealership thinking how do they stay in business with the take it or leave it attitude? Looked at Kawi Nomad and saved the R* for last. Absolutely the best value and took about 10 minutes to make the deal and I have not looked back since then. I bought a leftover from previous year for a deep discount. 30k later still makes me smile.

Do you mind me asking what dealer that was?

Has anyone seen any deals like that advertised lately?

This was my first bike in 15+ years Oh married life and young kids. All my bikes were sport bikes before. Thought about the HD's but way too much money
Took a buddy's VStar but thought it was kinda underpowered. Tried a Suzuki Boulevard. Didn't like the feel. Got on my soon-to-be Midnight and signed the papers the same day. Drove her home on Nov.23 and froze my barnacles off But wouldn't own anything else now

Kawasaki Drifter because of the Indian Chief looks but when I found out about the cost to switch the single seat out ($700) I asked about the R* next to it. Ain't looked back since.

Like ekonkjack I love the look of the Softail Deluxe. Looked at the Victory 8 Ball for a while but couldn't convince myself, and couldn't afford it for my first bike 6 years ago. So I bought a leftover V Star 1100 Custom, rode it 4 years and knew I needed more muscle. Yamahas are the only metrics I can stand the looks of, but even that is changing now. Everything is becoming too much like a space ship. Anywho, found my girl in Denver. An 07 with 2180 on the odo and lots of goodies on her. After tax/title/license, a one way plane ticket and a hotel in Lincoln Nebraska I got $7200 into her and no one will ever convince me a Harley is a better deal
