Yup, and turn it up for reserve. I shut it off before every time I stop the engine... just an old habit from 40 years of ridin'.

Re:Turning the valve to reserve tank 1 Year, 3 Months ago
I have done the "pumpless" mod, and since then my warning light comes on after I need to change the petcock to reserve. The effect is that terrible, oft unexpected, sinking feeling as the bike splutters.
I also grew up with bikes that had no fuel gauge, and am pretty adept at turning the petcock to reserve as the motor dies. I ride a lot in fast flowing heavy traffic, and still never found it to be a problem, though I can see how it might be to someone not yet familiar with their R*.

Bottom line:
1. Practice changing petcock to and from reserve on the move, till you have it down.
2. Always get down and check the petcock position visually after each fillup. If you adopt this habit, you will not be stranded quite so often

Never trust the light or gauge, EVER.
Don't count on reserve, EVER.

40 plus years of riding has convinced me of this. Know your mileages add a safety cushion then add some more and fill up! My current tank I have the luxury of being able to open the cap and look in but I don't. I also don't have petcocks with reserve ability. I know to go no more than 100 miles and then get gas. Period.

Learned about the Petcock from the MSR class. I had no light on the VStar. I don't trust lights or guages. Like it was said, get comfortable using it when you don't need it and you'll be okay when you do.

I use my petcock so much I'm going blind.

Leave mine on all the time. Never a problem.

I can't count on mileage since I have random electrical problems that regularly reset my clock & trip odo.

Haven't ever had a problem swwwitching it while on the run, even at Interstate speeds.

When that AZ heat is blasting and your tank level light goes out and you are 30 miles out on Highway 60? I use the odometers and refill with a gallon in reserve.

Re:Turning the valve to reserve tank 1 Year, 3 Months ago
I have always left it on with all my bikes and never really move to reserve as I will fill up before I get to that point BUT since being on this site I now close it when I park then shortly after shut the engine down. I do not have a puking problem and hope I don't begin to have one. Guess I started doing it just in case of a leak as mine sits in the garage next to Mama's SUV and fairly close to the waterheater, fridge/heater unit enclosure. Just taking precautions in my old age
