AIS INSTALL 1 Year, 3 Months ago
HI
I JUST DID THE AIS INSTALL,WITH SOME MINOR HICKUPS, FIRSTLY THE PHILLIPS HEAD SCREWS JUST DIDN'T WANT TO COME OFF & HAD TO BE PERSUADED WITH A CENTREPUNCH, WHICH DID THE JOB. NEXT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO LOOSEN THE ELBOWES IN THE HEAD WITH MY WOODEN DRIFT THE REAR ONE CAME AWAY EASILY BUT THE FRONT ONE WAS REALLY DIFFICULT SO I TRIED THE DRIFT AGAIN & IT BROKE OFF IN THE HEAD, I THOUGHT HOORAY,
ANYWAY I DRILLED THIS OUT WITH A 12MM DRILL & ON WITH THE ALLOY PLUG INSTALL WHICH WENT WELL & AFTER MY MINOR TRIBULATIONS IT LOOKS GREAT & RUNS JUST THE SAME,
I THOUGHT THAT I WOULD RAISE MY COUPLE OF PROBLEMS AS OTHERS MAY HAVE THE SAME THING HAPPEN.

Welcome George. Been lookin' at my AIS too thinkin' sooner or later it's outta there. After hearing your tribulations, maybe later (winter downtime). Guess I'll put it on the list.

Glad to here the un-install went relatively smoothly.

I'm surprised you don't notice that the bike is faster without the unnecessary weight.

Anyone thinking of removing there AIS ... (01 RS) With gaining knowledge from this site I tried a can of DUST REMOVER and turn the can upside down and sprayed the elbow, I believe it shrinks ever so slightly and I was able to turn the elbow with vise grips and worked it out with pure determination.

"Doc ... not only does she go faster without all the weight, I'm getting better gas mileage with out the resistance .... LOL ...

I take it that the ..'pre' 04's are a little harder to take off? my 04' took about 20 minutes and it was done and in a box. I'm gonna check it out.

If anyone here writes an idiots guide to AIS removal for a 1700 California bike, I just might try it. I've seen the 04+ for AIS and I've seen the CA supplemental for 99-03. However, for me to try it, I'd need a specific guide for my bike with lots of pictures, maybe some phone numbers, and perhaps an extra set of hands.

Seriously, I had just about gathered up the confidence to do it once (and relocate the fuel pummp while I was at it) and then I read a post about a guy sucking his tank in (collapsing it). That was the end for me.

04'and up are easy. Sounds like the others are a plug type pressed
in. Ever try freeze spray? We used to use it to remove valve guides. Spray it on the part and it shrinks it slightly.

That has nothing to do with these mods and can happen on a stock bike.

The tank can get sucked in if the vent hose become plugged or pinched, or the vent valve becomes plugged. The gas cap is not vented so when the fuel drains a vacuum in created in the tank.

Well, I'm sure that's exactly what happened, but it was in the course of doing this mod on a CA bike.
