Oil Change 7 Years, 6 Months ago
I changed the oil in the beast to synthetic. I put 4.73 qts. of oil in the thing. It is overfilled. I say this because after running the bike to ck. for lks. etc. and then riding down the road a bit. I came back ckd. the oil and it was about 2 inches above the cross hatching. Is this too much oil and do I need to drain some out to get it down to the cross hatching?

Thanks,

I don't know what napa has. I used a fram tough gaurd filter from wal-mart. Wal-mart also has the super tech oil filter that is used by the fella that wrote the oil change article that is on the home page. I also did the alternate method of putting oil in. Where you remove the plug on top of the crank case and put 3.2 qts of oil in, then put more oil in the oil tank. I used mobil 15-50 synth. Auto oil also. Mobil sells a synth. for v twins but it's about twice as much. So I will try this oil. Ifyou buy the big jug of oil and ithas 4.73 qts of oil in it or more, and you put it all in your bike, you will overfill the bike, and you will be like me this AM, going out to get a little messy draing some oil out.

Doc,

Well, I just went out to drain some oil, pulled the dip stick and with eng cold the oil level was half way down the crosss hatch area. What do you think. leave it alone or get the bike hot and drain ?

no,no,no, just 4.73 qts. total, I'm not a moron, well most of the time anyway.

Thats kinda like the guy who went out to service an AC unit and put 30 lbs. of freon in. Asked why he says thaats how much the bottle held. He did not last long.

Like i said I misunderstood you3.2 crank case 4.75 tank.
feel it to the top of the full mark hatch mark.
put a (very little)!!! in at a time! or you well be draining
it again.Poor alittle ,check poor alittle check!
I you have ran your bike than your crank case should be
full. All you have to do is top your hatch mark off
I am sure theres and easy way but been doing it like
this for years.
