What should I do about my carb? 1 Year, 2 Months ago
While installing my Ape hangers, I got to the throttle cables and I noticed how badly my intake manifold was cracked, went to the clinic and read that it's a common thing and so I decided to order a new one while the bike was apart and the weather was crappy...

And then I started reading about someone who smoked a harley.... and all the performance gained from re-jetting...

My bike is way slower than my boys RoadGlide- I mean he smoked me bad.... I do weigh 100lbs more than him but I'd never thought about the RS being fast at all....

Mine is a 99, it's a little wet at the air cleaner, it's probably never been rebuilt, it's got 55k on it.... my bike is slow.

SO- question, should I rebuild, rejet get a better carb, or just put it back together and ride it? If it ain't broke....

I'm not trying to open a can of worms, but if there was a time to think about this... it's now.

Thoughts?

Is the bike in the picture the one in question? If so, surely it has been jetted to accomodate the air kit and pipes, yes? That doesn't mean who did it did it right so you might check it out.

On a 99, there are several things you can do to help out; wrap the coils with splicing tape, port the intake, Dyna 3000, dial in the carb. Those make a difference.

Not saying that every Road* should out run every HD especially with 100 lbs in weight difference but he shouldn't be able to smoke you.

Yes, it's the bike in the picture.....

I haven't checked the recall yet- you mean like once the engine is out- have them put what????

BIgger pistons? Cams?

it's a tranny recall right?

I put the pipes on it- but it did have the airbox and duals when I got it.... and it has dyna 2000 I think......... I'm only getting aprox 30mpg.

should I just take it to the dealer and have them adjust the carb?

My new intake manifold is ported.

Don't take it to the dealer. Open the bottom of the carb and tell us what size jets are in there and Be careful not to bump the float.

at 30mpg, you are too rich, and too rich will rob power as well. there is absolutely no reason to get less than 40 and as high as 50mpg. if you really want to check mpg for best cruise mileage, it is kind of a mundane run, but it tells a lot.
do a ride at 60 to 65mph for at least 100 miles, this should be about the ideal mpg. try to get on a good straight road, and no playing with the throttle. Then do it again at 80mph

My last run at these speeds 49mpg at 65 (147 mile run)
40mpg at 80 ( 121 mile run)

I agree with Erbman .... too rich will not only affect gas mileage but power.

Open up the carb and check out what you have.

Those pipes will also rob you of a lot of torque which will slow you off the line. The HD has more power on the top end so with the loss of torque you'll be hard pressed to keep up.

100 pounds .... it all adds up.

your roadstar is sharp where did you get that back fender/bag combo.as for the mods.i ain't braggin but they ain't a harley yet to take mine.i mean that screamin chicken one they got too.just call patrick racing or go on the web.i have 136 hp/188 torq at the rear wheel.you get one of these kits and the only place you will be seeing your son is in the rearview !!!!!!!!promise ........its better to get the whole kit at once or start with that little oil pump gear first if not it will fail at the higher rpm.mine is a 2000 model and that was the first to fail at the stage 2 kit they got at speedstar.and also welcome to the clinic
