ring free additive 5 Years, 10 Months ago
Any thoughts/opinions on the "ring free" additive? Did the Mobile 1 V-Twin oil change w/Walmart filter about a month ago. Oil 1/2 up on dipstick. Gonna go to stage 3 mods on pipes and earplugs as a final resort. Going to the dealer tomorrow and if I get the "nature-of-the-beast" lecture I'll be out in 10 years with good behavior. (Gotta remember to tell the missus NOT to sell the beast while I'm gone). Thanks in advance!

I'll take it you're dealing with SVS? Ring free, seafoam, MMO, etc.. only clean the problem up temporarily, the problem must be solved to keep it from re-occuring. 2 cents, BB.

Been doing the MMO for the last 4 tanks w/no noticeable results. I gotta try whatever figuring sooner or later I'll hit on my magic fix. Got no plans on switching bikes though. This one's a keeper. Thanks for the input.

Run the bike at fast idle (about 1200 rpm) and spray the MMO thru the carb throat without stalling the bike.

After 30 seconds, let the bike idle normally and spray MMO to stall it out.

Leave it overnight. The next day when you start it, it should smoke and backfire. for a mile or so.

That should help clean it out a bit.

Something new - what is MMO. Have had intermittent SVS since about 5,000 miles. Only in winter and when starting out with a very cold engine. Have used Ring Free and Techron shock treatments with good results. Change oil immediately after. Have now followed the guidelines for less oil and await the cold weather this winter. I am in California and I know that it is not cold compared to the rest of the country. Anyway have lived with svs for a long time without tearing her down. Also leaned the pms down from 3 turns to 2 turns, and leaned out the duration screw - think that might have helped.

ps Doc - could you send me some info on quieting down the pro-pipe? I have had
problens with the baffles and have welded one and installed bedded in silicon-resolved the cracking but the packing blows out in a few thousand miles and the fine mesh screen is gone after about 10,000 miles. After that a repack is almost useless because it does not last. Am contemplating the Billet end cap and performance baffle because of durability and ease of access (silicon and welding not needed)but would like to not increase the db level.

Dave - The 04-05's were more prone to SVS than succeeding years. It may have been related to the narrower valve edges and seats for those years; they 'upgraded' the seat area on the 06 and up.

I would recommend that you run the carb on the lean side. When I ran the ProPipe and BAK, I had a Mikun 170 and clip on 4, but even that I was a bit on the rich side.

BTW ... are you running the Dyna on the 'A' settings?

I have had problens with the baffles and have welded one and installed bedded in silicon-resolved the cracking but the packing blows out in a few thousand miles and the fine mesh screen is gone after about 10,000 miles. The cracking is not uncommon. I don't know what their policy is but V&H has replaced cracked baffles.

I used the fine wire mesh that they used in window screens. I found anything else too coarse. I used two layers next to the baffle, then one layer of packing and then one layer of wire mesh. Wrapped it snuggly with wire to keep it in place. However, no matter how you do it, the packing will blow out. The constant exhaust hammering will fragments glass and blow it out.

I also tried coarse stainless steel wool (regular wool will burn up). I doesn't blow out but it also doesn't quieten the pipe down much. Maybe I was too impatient and should have tried more layers.

Thanks Doc. Never thought about spraying directly. Been adding MMO through the gas tank. Makes sense though.

Two things - as was stated the Ring Free or MMO is only a temporary fix and maintainance issue. You must solve the problem which in my mind is related to rich jetting conditions.

That being said I did a shock treatment with SeaFoam with my SVS but had little improvement. The Ring Free knocked it out right away.

I now have the bike jetted properly, but at .5 oz of Ring Free every few hundred miles.

I did Seafoam, kinda helped. Did ring free, helped a little more. Rode my bike in a monsoon, cleared it right up. Been running better ever since.
