I need some answers... 1 Year, 2 Months ago
After a good 100-125 mile ride my bike acted like it was flooded. Let me explain. On the last leg of the ride we stopped a few miles from the end before everyone seperated and went their own way. When I started the bike to head home I was surprised the carb did not puke like I expected it to. About 2 miles from my house the bike started acting as though it was flooding out. It spit and sputtered pretty bad causing me to pull over several time before I made it home. When I got home I let the bike sit for a few minutes and then started it up. This time it did puke and when I rev'ed the engine it seemed to run fine, no sputtering. By it not puking the previous start-up could that cause the engine to flood? This is my first experience with carb puking and I am still try to understand what's going on. I'm concerned about making any long distance trip until I know what's happening. I bought the bike a few weeks ago and I do not know anything about how it is jetted. The PO told me it was re-jetted by the dealer when they put Yamaha pipes and K&N air filter in the stock breather. I did extend the tube that the gas is puked thru to below the frame. Any ideas as to why it did this?

There's no tellin' what the dealer did when it was "rejetted". Probably wasn't necessary. With just the stock K&N filter replacement mine runs fine with the stock jetting - although I use a smaller main.

With the setup you describe the bike might even have less power than with the stock mufflers.

Anyway, when the fuel boils over it's caused by heat. Maybe it's running lean or the float's too high or even too low.

You need to find out what's in the carburetor and check the settings.

Its pretty normal for our bikes to puke through the carb. You cold of just had a little bad gas. You might want to run the bike on reserve for awhile and see if it might have some water in the tank. Or just shut the petcock and drain some gas from the reserve mode through the gas line into a cup or bottle. It might tbe the best way instead of taking a chance to put dirty gas into your carb.

Thanks Scott.
I will have to read up on how to do this and I will definitely look into it.

"You could of just had a little bad gas".

That's the first thing I thought also. I did fill up at a station I normally don't use. Me and one other bought gas there. I'll have to ask if he had any problems.

Well it is a easy check to do. If thats not the problem I sure Scott is right. Most dealers don't know what they are doing when it comes to jetting. And they don't want to waste time trying to get it right. Read up on it and see what you have in the carb then these guys like Scott can steer you right!

Good luck and i hope its only the gas. But The puking is pretty common on the R* Especially when bliping the throttle.

never had my carb puke. But after reading about it here---before I stop and put her in the garage I shut the fuel petcock off and let her idle for a few seconds. Also while riding when stopping shut off the fuel a few moments before shutting the engine down. Maybe this helps

I've only had mine do this once. Rode from Kansas City to St. Louis, pulled up in my friends driveway and shut down. Just a couple minutes later tried to restart to let him listen to it and...PUKE... 10 minutes later it started just fine and never had another problem. It was right at 90 degrees that day and except for one gas stop it was a straight thru ride so she was warm to say the least.

With that ride, the gas stations along that route sell nothing but ethanol so I'm not surprised your carb puked. Mine used to puke all the time and was a pain to get restarted but since I started avoiding gas stations that sell ethanol, I no longer have that issue. Unfortunately not everyone can avoid E10
