All I know about oil, I use & will continue to use Rotella. As a side note Fram filters SUCK!

Your right ,fram filters arent what they were many yrs ago, wont use them either,i prefer Wix/NAPA .

In case you were not aware dont run conventional shell rotella 15-40 anymore because it has a lower zddp lvl (1050-1100ppm) since a few yrs back and isnt doing you bikes ft cam any justice.

If you want to stay with shells rotella line of diesel oil for your bike shell's T6 5w-40 full syn oil has bearly enough zddp at 1200ppm to do the job.

I contacted shells oil tech staff to get that info directly from them and they said its JASO certified for wet clutch apps and also said its ok for r* as long as bike mfg rec's 40wt oil for their bikes.

Also,if you want to stay with the cheaper 15-40 diesel oil chevrons delo 15-40 still has a decent zddp lvl pf 1300ppm which is what i consider the safe base minimum zddp lvl for the R*'s ft cam'd motor.

Chevrons been mfg that delo oil for yrs and also has a good rep to dont be afraid to run that if need be but for me i like to saty with bike specific oil only that has a better 1400-1700zddp lvl depending on mfg and it alkso has no fric mods thats most pass car truck oils has which can lead to clutch slippage in some cases, not all.

BTW,your bike is BAD ASS for sure, looks great!

Ride safe!!!!

I've heard a few people say that fram filters aren't good but I've never heard what is wrong with them. I have never heard of a eng problem related to a fram filter. I've been in the bussiness for a lot of years and have used many brands of filters.( I worked for municipality and we bought everything from the lowest bidder) I have never seen a "Properly Maintained" engine fail due to bad oil or bad filter. I'm talking about normal use. Not a race car or something that is just flat out abused. So what is wrong with Fram filter? I'm not positive but if you have a failure due to there filter and can prove it, I think they will replace the engine free.

I know one guy whose fram filter ripped to shred, clogged his oil screen and destroyed his cams and lifters, he rebuilt the engine (retired ford machinist) couple yrs later, used one of the cleanable filters, the epoxy loosened, clogged his oil tubes, even found pieces in the tubes, filter company refused to repair, once again he rebuilt the engine

There's just something about cardstock type endcaps for the filter media that bugs me.

Now I just install the K&N and replace it every other change. Don't worry, I know what I'm doing, it'll be okay.

If you are interested in oil filters for bikes & why some are better than others go HERE. This guy dissects, does a comprehensive study and shows you the differences between filters. Very informative and useful.

FWIW, I've decided the Purolator PUREOne(PL14610) filter is the one for me. It's big @3.25 inches long, is well made, priced right($6) and filters well. The downside is it comes out of the box a horrid mustard yellow, but a quick coat of flat black solves that problem.

A website like that is where I saw that the Yamaha OEM filter had paper like filter caps like other cheaper ones. Shocked me especially considering what they charge for the things. That's when I changed to the K&N. Synthetic media and metal innards.

Thanks Mark
That is an interesting article. I was suprised to see some of the brands on this list of non recommended filters

Motorcycle Filters.
None are recommended.

AC Delco PF2135
AMSOil SMF103
Carquest 85358
FRAM PH6017A
Honda 15410-MCJ-000
K&N KN-204, about $13. Metric nut on end for easy removal.
NAPA Gold 1358
Purolator ML16817. Imported, not made by Purolator.
STP SMO 07
WIX 51358

He explained why he thought some were better than others and it was mostly due to filter media area. Not from premature engine failure during normal use with proper change intervals.
