I have a 2004 roadstar. I know what motor knock sounds like, but what I have is a metal 'pinging" sound under acceleration. Like metal being stressed. Its high pitched not like a knock. Does anyone else have this problem? or know what it could be. thanks ride safe

Sounds like it might be detonation.

Try switching your brand of gas or gas stations. You should be using regular gas (87 octane) but you can also trying switching to the higher octane rated gas (91).

You might also want to check that you are not running too lean.

I think your on to something. i had a jet kit with the new air box installed and i am having problems in high gear. the bike falls on its face while cursing, Kinda like your hitting a wind gust. i called the shop that did the work and they said to bring it back in to get re adjusted (raise the needle?). i will let you know after they do the work. thanks again this is a great site with good people.

You might want to check the adjustment on your tps. http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/64/96/

Also, the bike will be more prone to pinging if it is not in a low enough gear.

Post edited by: USAFRETIRED, at: 2005/12/02 15:17
