Be sure to check the classifieds here. I bought a set of V&H Long shots from a member here for $125 shipped. They needed a little TLC to make them shine like I wanted and I had to have some O2 bungs welded in so that I could continue to use the stock 08's 02 sensors. Keep that in mind that you'll either want to buy a pipe that is provisioned for 02 bungs or be prepared to have to get some welded in.
I could not be any happier with the sound the V&H longshots produce!. OMG! I've had other bikes before and would hear some that had just that awesome deep classic rumble and to hear them gas it down the road. WOw!. Never thought I'd have that same sound but now I do. I love to crack the throttle in between shifts or under over passes just to hear the roar!.
Everybody is different though with what they like. Like color choices, none of them are wrong its just what you like.
Best of luck & ride safe brother!
-Brian.
P.S. Don't waste your money on a PCIII. You dont need it on a Fuel Injected bike with O2's.

I had Samson Shogun pipes on mine before I went with the Freedom duals. They sounded excellent but the baffles were welded in them.I had a set of these on my 2008 and they were loud. Here in KY the police normally don't hassle people on exhaust sound. I had the police following me around just waiting for a chance to bust me. They were almost like straight throughs with a megaphone can on the end. The last 10" acted like a resonator and would ring at certain rpms. I tried to sell them but after they heard what they sounded like they just walked off saying "Too loud."

I have the Cobra Speedster Shorts, really good hotrod sound. They have a crossover tube section welded to the mufflers that bridges them giving it a little more power like a 2 into 1 would (so they claim). I really like the sound of them over the Longshots (a few folks in my star club have the Longshots).

Here is a link to a youtube I did with the phone.

One thing I forgot to tell you about mine; I did the crumb cake mod so they aren't terribly loud, loud enough, but not police following you loud. The crumb cake mod is the the tech articles. I also think that it helped torque slightly by giving a little back pressure.
You can really hear the air cleaner.

I also have an 08 R* and looking to upgrade exhaust from stock. With limited funds, I am looking for a used set. No luck in the classifieds, so if anyone is thinking about switching things up, toss me a line. BTW, I have a line on a set that would need O2 bungs welded in. Is that an expensive process, and is it hard to find a place to do it? Thanks for any help.

I've got the V&H Powershots. They are well made and will not blue anywhere due to the full length shields. They have a nice aggressive sound and if you're light on the throttle through your heighbourhood they aren't real real loud. But if you grab a hand full you'll wake the neighbours for sure.
I will say that I like the look of the big straights better especially in the 3". One minor thing is that the dip in the Powershots right at the transfer case cover makes checking the gear oil level using the weep hole pretty much a pain in the backside (read impossible).
Sorry, I don't really have a way to provide you with a sound bite.

2003 Midnight (the the fastest ones, lol) Cobra Speedster longs...I looked at and listened to everything on the market. To me these had the best sound, nice low, deep rumble, no crackling sound or high pitch sound...and they have the option of differnt baffles..on a side note I do beleave Vance and Hines has better chrome on their heat sheilds.

I was just getting ready to start a thread for my 08 *. Why is it no one is making pipes for the 08 and up *s??? I'm looking to get some pipes as well. I thought I had seen somewhere that the pipes for any 1700 would fit all the 1700 years. Anyone know if that is true??? And does anyone know where I can get a set of pipes for under $500. Lol.

Any pipe for any Road Star will fit. Mine are off of my 03. You will have to install bungs if you are going to use the O2 sensors.

If I am not mistaken, you can plug the O2 sensor port...
That controls the air/fuel mixture and if you're getting aftermarket pipes you should probably get a PCIII.. which will take over controlling that air/fuel mixture... This is what i've heard, if anyone knows for sure different let me know...
Ride safe and stay on two wheels!!!!!!!!
