Mine just started this nonsense (01 model). Sometimes the fuel gauge works right, gut mostly now it reads empty, and the fuel light blinks. WTH??? Is there a fix for this, or are we doomed to wait for recall?

Yes and I don't think mama yama is gonna help us out.

Two ways to 'fix' this issue.

First, replace the float and sensor in the tank. Somewhere around $95.

Second, is to take the float and sensor out of the tank and gently bend the 'fingers' that move with the float and ride against the stationary circuit board so that they press against it better. This is a stopgap measure and while it works for a while, I'm sure that it's a temporary fix. It's cheap though, just your labor.

You might try to tighten up the float arm where it pivots. That seems to me to be the real problem with it, because it eventually works itself loose and causes the 'fingers' to compress so that when it sways away from the board, they lose contact. Bad design by Yami right there. It could and should be corrected, but don't count on it.

It would be great if we found a way to correct this ourselves.

Ratl.

If this problem was happening to my car or van and was happening to others with the frequency as it is happening to Road Star users there would be a recall!

What can WE do to get the ball rolling to get Yamaha to fix this problem for us?

Well I dont know why, but a while back I had the same issue and the overnight unplug battery gimmick did work and has been issue free for months now. Prior to that fix, I took a hole punch for notebook paper and punched out a circle of black E-tape and installed it over the blinky light , good fit and worked great....
