thinking of installing 14" apes

I really like the feel of my new 14" bars. Not sure how much difference it would make to add the extra 2", but I'm happy with what I have.

I'm 6'3" and fat. Here's what I did. Sit on the bike, close your eyes and put your hands out where you feel they should be. That's where you may want your bars. For me my hands always ended up around the top of the stock mirrors on the stock bars. That's about the same at 16" bars on stock risers. If you're worried about going to high than maybe go to 12" bars. If that's too low you can bump them up with 2" risers. Assuming your cables are long enough. 14" bars would need 8" over cables and hoses. Remember to consider if you're going with aftermarket grips or want to move your stock grips over. That's what I'm dealing with now.

Call Tim at Metric Magic for good prices and advice. http://www.metric-magic.com/

I have Burley 14" Apes on my R* and LOVE 'em! Perfect height for me and if I ever want to go taller I left wiring long enough for taller risers. I'm 5'9" if that helps.

I went with +6 cables and they worked out good. Don't remember what the front brake hose is (I'm only using 1 caliper). Wires didn't need to be extended, but will need it when I run them inside the bars.

I started with 12" Burly bars and went up to 16". I could have been happy with 14" also. One thing to consider is the laws in your state for bar height. I've been pulled over 3 times by the local yocals but have yet been given a ticket. Oh, and I'm 6ft tall and my hands are about 1" above my shoulders when riding. Hope that helps some.

I'm 5'10" and went with the Burly 14". They put my hands just a little bit lower than my shoulders and it feels just right.

Looks awesome. What brand of bars are those? I was going to order some from BR (where madjacker got his) but I spoke with Bill (BR) last night and he is about 6 weeks out for delivery. I was hoping to have them mid May fitted for my fairing.

I saw some from Road 6 Customs on eBay that will knurl for our risers but never heard of them before. However, it looks like they sell many of them.

Are you planning to run now w/out the fairing?

The bars in the pic are Custom Chrome, but I cut and rewelded them to get the shape the way I wanted them. I'm going to get a set of the Road 6 bars though. I have the fairing on now, I just wanted to try them out and didn't have the patience to bolt everything back on.

I was having trouble deciding between 14 and 16" bars, cause I was afraid they'd be too tall...sure glad I went with the 16"s!!! I'm 5'10 with short arms and they fit me great!!!
