It took me a little while to get used to the shift points on mine, I was pretty bad about short-shifting. But one of the things I love most about the R* is that it has character. Its old school, pushrod, air cooled, tough-as-nails and she talks to ya... Man I love my bike!

Don't have a tach. I have a shift ear that seems to work good enough though. These are approximately the speeds I shift at for everyday riding.

Shift into:
2nd - 27
3rd - 42
4th - 53
5th - never below 60

I use the motor to slow down to a certain point then I'm mostly a front brake user. I use both right before coming to a stop or if a big ass truck pulls out in front of me.
Will it hurt the engine to shift to fifth between 55 and 60

No. If I know that I will be cruising for quite some time, even at 55, I'll go into 5th, but if I know it will be kind up and down in speed, I'll just keep in 4th.

I pretty much shift by the mood I'm in. Original owner put a nice Baron's tach on it, but since the motor is rev-limited, you'll only get so much anyway. The few times that I do "get on it", it's usually about 3k at the shifts, otherwise 2k since I ride conservatively.

Tach's are for woosies, just kiddind I don't have one on mine but plan on adding it this summer. I too shift by ear and it seems to work pretty well. I still haven't decided on which one to install yet.

"It's ok on the Roadie though Max because it doesn't have any tensioners." "The primary and cams are gear driven." "The only chain on the whole bike is in the transfer case and that thing is tougher than the rest of the bike."

Holy crap Texas Scott, I haven't had the cases split, and it never occurred to me to look in the manual, I just presumed the chain/belt was standard fare on the Road Star.

Guess I'll be in the book tonight.
