Windshield cleaining (in between)? 1 Year, 3 Months ago
Quick question for you's guys....

I kept losing the windshield bolts and acorn nuts from my Silverado windshield, so I finally put loctite on all of them. Now, I really want to take the windshield apart to clean between the two panes of plastic (how the heck does it get dirty in there?)...

Any thoughts on cleaning between the plastic and or keeping it clean? I have no idea how stuff gets in there, but it must be at speed or from the water pressure when washing....

Thoughts?

The plastic just sandwiches together so everything gets between the 2 pieces..
I lost about half the acorn nuts and bolts on my 06' the dealer broke the windshield 3 times, than gave me one of the showroom floor. I don't go back to them they just gave me a bag of acorn nuts and bolts to put in. The bolts are too short and the loctite on the bolts is not reaching the acorn nuts threads..
Soo I bought Stainless bolts and just use nyloc nuts so I do not loose anymore, but can take it apart...

Oh yah about cleaning, I use a piece of t-shirt with Meguires Spray Detailer to clean, just pull the piece back and forth between the 2 layers, the shirt is thin enough to fit without much stress... I use spray detail on the rest of the shield everyday just about I get a lot of bugs and its cheaper than Novice Plastic polish.

I spray pledge on mine. the plastic around the headlight is
flexable so I just push it in and wipe with a soft cloth.
I've only lost one acorn. Bowhunter that sounds like a good
idea.

Yamaha's "Instant Detailer, Cleaner & Polish" works great on my winsdshield to remove bugs and polish the plastic perfectly. It seems to make the winshield repel bugs and rain better too. The bugs that do manage to splat and stick, are way easier to clean off too.

I use FastWax otherwise known as FW1 on everything. I think most of these waxes mentioned here are all about the same except for price. Haven't washed my bike with water in ages.

hypecat:

I use Plexus on my windshield. It runs about $9 for a tall spray can and keeps the shield squeaky clean.

I have heard about the acorn nuts coming off, but I al;so learned that those darn phillips button-head bolts will round out very easily, so...

I bought some allen button-head bolts and stainless steel washers, then used medium strength loc-tite on the acorn nuts. The bolts are easy to remove and I have not lost a single nut.

Please note that the windshield screws come in 2 different lengths. The ones for the badges and both windshield sections and rubber pad are longer than the ones for the windshield alone. Found this out after the dealer had sold me several short ones and I had lost two of the chrome badges and rubber pads!!!! $$$$$ Always install with medium loctite. Make the dealer go to the fiche and show him you want the screws for the badges!!

...Partsmen have very unique fingers on both hands whe they get out of school.
On the left hand: Two fingers are permanently fixed to clench the cigarette.
On the right hand: Two fingers are permanently fixed and curled in order to grasp the coffe-cup handle.
( I used work as a parts-driver at a delaership with a parts guy like that.)

Take the thin lower piece of plastic off & leave it off. You don't need it, there will be no difference in wind & it makes the windshield and every thing behind it much easier to clean. Mine started to look like crap anyway with fine scratches & polishing it did not help. You'll like how nice it looks with out it.
