Re:Carb Pukeing 4 Years, 9 Months ago
Just thought I would do an update on this. The fuel pump was changed in March and I have done a lot of riding now, some in intense heat, some over 10,000 feet, stop and go, etc.... Hasn't puked again!!!! A couple times it has boiled a drop or so out, maybe a smell of gas on those very hot days, but nothing that has concerned me. There hasn't been much on the clinic lately about this problem but I thought I would close this out.

I will add an update on my issue as well. Shortly after the last posting in March I had the Gas Tank off for some reason and discovered as I went to reinstall that there was evidence that the vent tube had been kinked enough to block it. I placed one of the protecting bands that are on the line right over the kink to add some support and carefully routed the line to insure that it did not get kinked or pinched. Since doing that I have ridden at least 6,000 miles in all types of conditions and weather, altitudes of over 5,500 feet to sea level and no puking at any time. I still make a habit of turning the fuel off when I stop and turning it on after the bike is started, but no puking. It seems strange that something like that could cause the problem, but since the fix no issue.

Hi All,
Have been watching these post about carb over-flowing for some time and just waiting for my '07 to start.

Well it did, last Monday in Hill City,SD right at the first tunnel on Needles highway. Did it again later on the same highway amd once in Sturgis, the same day. I stopped by the Star factory tent in Sturgis to ask about it . Their on-site mechanic first tried to tell me it was a dirty air cleaner caused by too much oil. He removed the air cleaner and checked the oil in the tank and decided that was not the problem. Then he told me Uamaha had been having problems with the float needle sticking on the road star caused by people using gas with ethanol. I told him I never put ethanol in my bike. He said all gas in South Dakota had ethanol in it. Right!!!!!

He did try to find a local shop to put in an over-nighted needle, but it would be 2 or 3 days and maybe they could get to it. I just had him register the complaint and told him "if it burns up on the way home, Yamaha could replace it". He didn't say anything as I started it and about a pint leaked out on his floor.

Long story short, I just made a habit out of turning the gas off before I turned the bike off. Mayby 30 seconds before and it hasn't happened since.

I am going to pull my tank tonight though. It dawned on me after reading the previous post, that I had my tank off the night before I left to run a wire for a power outlet. Might have pinched the vent hose. If not , off comes the carb.

Just thought I would add my experiences,

jv

Hey JV

He might be right about the gas in SD. In Minnesots it's a law. 10% eth in all gas. But I don't believe the problems are caused by corn.

Re:Carb Pukeing 4 Years, 9 Months ago
My '07 has puked twice this summer. Both times very hot, once after a fairly long ride in city traffic, and later at high altitude after a long hot pull up the mountain. Runs fine, but after shutting it off then restarting in few minutes. Gas runs out on engine, and engine is flooded and starts hard.
Both times I have started shutting off the fuel when I shut off the engine, and not turn it on until after the restart. Try to do that whenever the conditions seem right for it to happen, and no more problem.
It is a pain in the rear, and definately not safe, so I will also be interested in the answer. I will talk to my dealer about it sometime this month.

I had this problem all of last summer on my '99 roadie as well. I bought this bike last July from a private sale and he didn't tell me anything about this problem and replied later that if the bike is flooding it was my fault somehow.

Well, after looking into it on this site, I am convinced it is a Yamaha problem.

I too shut my gas off for some seconds before shutting the engine off, and then start the bike up, let it run for a few seconds, then open the gas as well; this doesn't always seem to do the trick though; once in a while she will still flood and gas will run out down the tubes.

Yes, it seems to be more of a problem during hot weather as well.

Anyway, my .02

I sure wish we could get Yahama to take care of this somehow.

I had the same problem with my 06 when I bought it new. It puked 5 or 6 times and always on days that were warm. I lowered my float just a little so the bowl would not be so full. That seemed to solve the problem. I have since put about 15000 miles on this last summer on days that were very warm and it has not acted up since. I am a lot happier.
