Oil change before 600? 4 Years, 9 Months ago
I've forgotten which forum I got this from (a senior moment thing...), but this fella's recommendation for changing the oil way before the first 600 mile mark seems reasonable, and I'm thinking of doing it myself before I even hit the first 100 miles on my 2007 Roadie. Then I'd take it in to the stealership for the 600 mile super-duper-oil-change-of-the-century later. Am I being overly cautious?

The URL is http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

I'd appreciate any thoughts on this.

Nothing wrong with that, I did it at 550 miles and then at 1,050 miles changed the oil and went with synthetic.

I saw that article shortly after I had broke mine in. I wish I would have seen it before I took the bike off the dealer lot. I would have done it all that way.

Hey Bro,
Here goes, I might be a little off on the exact quotes and words here but this is information from I think Joel (ODO). When you get your new bike any make or model the first 100 miles are the most crucial. Strong break in period. Moving metal to metal parts. This is the time that the small micro shavings will come off the metal. After 100 miles change the oil. During the break in period do not baby it but ride it like you would normal. Hey save yourself a ton of money and do all scheduled maintence yourself . As long as you save your receipts and and keep good records your warrenty will not be void. I hope this helps you out. Take care and God Bless. Mike (OSO-LOCO)

I changed mine twice before the 600 mile change. Think it was 100 and then 300 miles.
Around the 600 mile I changed to V-Twin Mobil 1 synthetic and their M-110 filters which is just a little longer and holds more then stock. Think they run about $10 but we spend more then that for a good wax or some more chrome. Don't forget to fill your filter before installing it. That way it starts to work right away.

You guys are great. I really appreciate your help. I guess my final question is what petroleum-based 20W-50 or 20W-40 do you recommend? I don't want to pour in a synthetic just to dump it 500 miles later. I've read pros and cons about Castrol, absolutely no Pennzoil. Yamalube, maybe. I've had many bikes, but this is the first NEW one, so I want to make sure I don't cause any long-term problems.

Post edited by: papatom, at: 2007/08/17 11:00

I'm of the oil is oil school of thought. Just put any MO in it and go.

Yamahlube does seem to become entrained with air so the motor runs noisier.

Thanks Doc. I'm of the same opinion. I was also making sure I wouldn't be voiding the warranty (also got Y.E.S., sure didn't want to void that one!) if I changed the oil myself. Thanks again everyone!
