Buttons on our dash, repairable? 4 Years, 9 Months ago
One of the boys I ride with has an 00 roadie with about 30,000 miles on her. Of late , the dash buttons (Odo counter, A,B,clock) have started to get very difficult to push, leaving him with no way to set the clock, check MPG, etc... The dealer said the whole dash has to be replaced....gulp..... Is there a repair for this, or is replacement his only option? Thanks guys, BB.

He doesn't have to buy the entire dash but it looks (to me) like they treat the speedo and buttons are a unit.

Looks like it could be taken apart and checked out a little closer for a possible fix.... I have repaired buttons on calculators etc with some cleaning before ...Coug

Good luck on the repair.

It looks like to me that you can't buy the part that you need.

Check e-Bay. A few days ago I saw a guy parting out a bike and he was selling a dash.

Here's a new one ... http://cgi.ebay.ca/XV-1600-Road-Star-Speedometer-New-NOS_W0QQitemZ160147250688QQihZ006QQcategoryZ50463QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem There is however a fogging issue with the 99 dash.

I couldn't find any other so it may have been when I was looking for parts for my car.

A new unit ....speedo W\buttons etc. that fits into the console if you look at Muskys diagram inside the broken lines outline... costs 289. bucks BB.....a catch 22 if you bid on a used unit and it craps out 2k miles later ....good luck to your friend.....Coug

As a former electronic technician, I'm guessing that your buttons are just getting dirty...go to Radio Shack and buy a can of Tuner Cleaner for around $5 bucks. Tear into your panel until you can squirt right up into the knobs themselves...make sure your key is off...soak them until it runs out everywhere. Cycle (press) each button a dozen times and soak again. You can take an air hose to the buttons and gently blow to speed up the drying process if you want. Have an old towel laying under the buttons when spraying so you don't soak everything else. The cleaner won't hurt your paint or anything. Might work, if not, you are only out $5 bucks. Good luck. - Rod.

Thanks guys, I'll pass this along. I'm the un-official "guy" in my group of riding buddies that ends up doing the work on every ones bikes anyhow, so I'll be the one putting these tips to use. BB

+1 on Ebay - I see both 1600 and 1700 versions all the time.
