Hi,
key has slam wore out and refuses to turn the ignition switch on.
I would like to set up the ignition on toggle switches with the spring loaded switch for starting, what wires go where, if anyone knows.
Thanks

I ride alot far into the desert alone for camping and such. it will totally suck to have this bike not start cause the key and the ignition switch were/are worn. Today I nearly had to have it hauled back to my house from the bank because the key would not turn to the on position no matter if I pushed down, let it up or ,removed and put it back in. After messing with it for some 25 minutes it finally went to on and I rode it straight home.
I am a function over looks person. I can afford to figure the wiring out a lot cheaper than I can buy a new switch and key.
I did this in the old days to a 900 Kaw and it worked great till the bike was ready for the junkyard.

Speaking of getting a key made. Where do you get the code from for the key. I asked about this at a dealership when i first got the bike and was told that it was in the ignition housing and was "an involved procedure" to gain access to it...
I figured "involved procedure" meant big bucks for labour $40.00 for a new Yamaha key...

The key is made of softer material than the ignition so it will wear..... instead of the ignition internals wearing. I have had worn keys copied, you just need to find someone who has experience in cutting keys...try your smaller local hardware stores. I would think the dealer would want to help little things like that is what make's repeat customers. Good luck!

I had an extra key made last year. Yami wanted 15 bucks just for the pretty yami blank, before cutting it. I went to the local locksmith, he had a blank and cut it for 2.99

My code was written in the front of the owners manual for some reason.
