When you are sliding down the road collecting your road rash is the wrong time to think about your leathers. Helmet always, of course along with gloves and boots.

As you are crashing, in the milliseconds that seem like hours, as you slide along the pavement, wishes of gear you should have on are endless. Those cool gloves with no wrist strap were the 1st thing to come off, then the boot , also with no buckle or strap, and then attention gets drawn to the pounds of flesh flaking off your azz, as you try to relieve the road rash there and put some on the other side, again, your bare hands peal layers upon layers of skin off, then come the elbows, (You'll never get to a funny bone in this scenario) You'll knock your ankle bones, break some toes since your boots came off, and depending on how fast you were going when you fell, you'll be working on scraping your skin off at the hip until you see the bones. You'll notice things are very loud when you crash, that's because you didn't have a helmet on and your ears have been ripped off. Not to mention the many knots on your head.
You can never have too much gear on when it happens, What you should ride with and what you do are two different things. I wish you all are never wishing like this.

Been there, Layed my last bike down trying to avoid hitting a car that had stopped to turn while coming over a bridge and I was doing about 75 over the bridge. I passed there a 1000 times and never knew there was a turn there. I was driving too fast because I was pissed at my celluar company cause they kept screwing up my bill and on the way to argue with them. Best Advice I can give on this senerio is dont ride when your pissed. Ride for enjoyment and slow down your thinking so you can concentrate on cagers and the road.
I was wearing a nylon USMC jacket and no gloves, Vega half helment and western boots. Broke my left leg just below knee and left collar bone. had road rash brusing on left side and leg. The doc used external fixators and screws to put my shin bone back together. Took almost 2 yrs to heal up enough to walk half way decent and get back to work. Believe it or not the nylon jacket stopped the road rash on my arms and my hands were not too bad either. My new boots had to be cut off. My half helment was scrapped very bad on left side but protected me and did not have a scratch on my head or ear. I have to say I road quiet a bit without my helment in the past but this made me a belever in the helment.( I still believe in the right to choose though)I always wear full leather gloves also now and i usually wear at least a long sleeve denim shirt even in the summer. And Boots.
Hard lesson Learned
Then 2 years later got hit by someone while driving my truck and liked to kill me. Broke same leg again to and bottom this time. I am lucky to be riding and walking again. Almost 4 yers off the bike due to these 2 accidents.
My friends and family say! I can't believe your riding a motorcycle again. I tell them I got hurt worse in thw truck accident than my bike accident. If its gonna happen it gonna happen.
Just be careful and ride safe with a straight head!
Now you know the rest of the story!

Amazing what leather can do to make your skin stay on. Boots and gloves of some sort are a must. Don't always use a brain bucket but I'm sure that one will bite me some day

OK I guess I will be that guy. I always ride with a helmet because its the law. The Navy requires me to have full finger gloves, long pants and boots. They also require long sleeves however in the summer its usually a long sleeve Tshirt or a long sleeve button down that I can remove once I leave base. 90+ degrees and leather dont mix. Just my 2 cents.
