Hey Kai ... 11 Months, 3 Weeks ago
..

Sorry to bother you again but, you are kinda the clinic's 'go to guy' on these MUTAZU hardbags and the lowering of them etc ..

I noticed what seemed a very close similarity in shape between the MUTAZU RS hardbags and the 2006 Yamaha Midnight Silverado hardbags, that I mounted on my 1999 XV1600AL, that I rebuilt with 03 Liquid Silver tins.
They don't have them listed in the accesory page, but do you think if I could talk MUTAZU into selling me a running light assembly for their RS bags, that I could cut out and mount them on my factory bags?

I'm also wondering if the RS lock assembly on your MUTAZUs, looks like it will fit on a OEM hardbag. Do you have a factory bag to compare it to so you could advise me on this?

Thanks for helping out, the lights are a whim, but the locks are kinda vital, since I broke one trying to open it, when it froze some moisture in the lock on a 27 degree ride last winter. I have not found a Yammy dealer yet, that knows how to find a set, or can tell me anything but order a new set of bags ..

If you just broke the cylinders on the bags, you can get a replacement from Amazon for about $6.

Look for Cylinder Latches. I think you need the 0.400" ones.

I'm not finding anything on Amazon, or e-bay.

What broke is at the bottom of the pushbutton, there is a narrow finger that pushes against an inside bevel of the sliding latch that catches and holds/releases the lid. That finger is only plastic like the rest of the bag and broke when I misinterpreted the sliding latch frozen in place, as just some minor resistance.

If they are similar enough, the MUTAZU cylinder latches will be perfect and only $25 instead of $900-$1,200 for OEM or $285 for the MUTAZU bags.
And it's not like they are competing with Yamaha or anyone else, since nobody is willing to advertise a replacement other than them.

I'm actually kinda miffed at Yamaha over the whole ordeal ... I mean it doesn't take rocket science to figure this will have a high chance for failure, the design is fairly weak to start with, and then they don't list a replacement part ...
Kinda reminds me of how HD screwed their dealers with Panhead warranties.

I mean really, the finger at the bottom of the pushbutton that pushes straight downwards into the sliding latch at about 22.5 deg against about a 45 deg angle on the inside of the plastic latch, is about 1/8-3/32 in diameter and 1/2-3/4 inch long, this is definately minimally engineered.

Thanks for that link Fireman, that is exactly the right size and shape.
If the matched key pair of Mutazu locks proves incompatible, that will be a definate replacement for the broken one.

Max, sorry to respond so late, but I would go with Firemans suggestion. The Mutazu RS bags locks are kinda flimsy, the light system is plastic chrome, so no I wouldn't advise it. I bought the bags because of the similarity to the OEM bags and they were 1/3 the price of the OEM bags. But I made a support bracket to stabilize mine so that they would work for my bike. Kai

Ok, thanks Kai, +1 on the Mutazu hardbag prices, I also agree with avoiding trying to install plastic chrome.

Thanks again to everyone else that pitched in.

Roadstar Clinic, still the best place for Roadstar advice !!
