Traded my 03 R* for a 03 Venture. The Royal star is more of a touring bike straight up. Its not a torque monster as the Road* is but you can ride it all day with less wear and tear. It is smoother and at made for longer trips. If you do not mind the higher revs you will be shocked at how fast these engines are. The air shocks are a plus. Again to each his own. If you ride longer rides and want a more plush ride you can not beat the royal star. If most of your trips are limited to a day or less I would stay with the Road*.

Well said. I traded my 07 RSTD for my R* and I love me Roadie and don't miss the RSTD. I didn't like the high rev engine, always was looking for another gear. It was however a good long tripper bike had a real cruise control, air adjustable shocks, great saddle bags. I had the custome Star seats from Ultamate. It's an all around good bike. But the Road* would take it easy in 1/4 mile. It's not a quick bike, but will hod its own. Cruising at 80 all day no problem. I just could not get over the high rev engine.

You've done a great job on the R* but I understand when you have a great bike that no longer matches your style and pref's. Sounds like touring and "just get on and go" are at the top of the priority list now. The bike you are considering looks like a great bike.

Have you considered other models - for Yamaha perhaps a 'Liner?

Both are nice bikes. I love Royal Stars , esp. that generation. Back then they were more than I could pony up. If you like it , then get it. If not , you have a really nice ride already. I doubt the Royal* would disappoint.

My wife rides a Magna 750 (Honda's V-4) , it was a 12 second bike from the factory (faster than my 07 Stock Roadie), it just develops the power through Revs instead of Torque. 57,000 miles later , I've never touched the carbs , so don't let the boogy man scare you from the 1300 , if you indeed want it. 2 cents , BB

There are only a handful of bikes that would get me off my R/S.
The Royal Star is one of them.
Enjoy the ride !!

Someone traded one in a few days ago for a BMW at one of the local second hand shops. That is a really nice bike.
I just got my Roadie where I wanted it so I wouldn't trade it for anything right now. I keep talking about getting a second, touring bike, in the future. I think it will be a Wing but I will have to give the RS a look, too.

Stretched nacelle...sweet!

Hey, on the pipes, have you thought about running duals? They are a longer pipe with a diff note and puts the sound behind you. You would have to modify your Bad Dad fender and current bags but its not an impossible project. Some buy their parts with the cutouts but it seems that for R* its necessary to modify the cutouts according to where the pipes rest anyway. Hoblick created/modified the cutouts in his bags and fender for his build. He also had to elongate the duals he installed to make them clear the rear of the bag.
