Routing wires inside the bars... 1 Year, 11 Months ago
I'm considering some beach style cruiser bars and like the clean look of the wires being routed inside the bars. Is it necessary to cut off the connectors and re splice the ends of the wires in order to get them to fit through the holes in the bars or is it a simple "plug 'n play"? Also, will a 1.25" or even 1.5" bar fit in the stock mounts?

Thanks,

Doc,don`t cut your wires.go to Sears or any tool store and get a set of wire picks.Use them to release the pins inside the connectors.your wires will pop out and then you can bundle them together and feed them thru your bars. Also make a diagram of where each wire goes into each connector.Don`t know if a 1.5 bar will fit,but a 1.25 will fit if you grind out the risers with a dremel.you only have to remove about an eight of an inch and you`re good to go.Good luck!

first things first.

are the bars drilled for internal wiring? some folks have bought bars that they thought were, but were looking at the small holes where the plastic clips enter to hold the wires outside.

if the bars are much wider or higher, you may have to extend the wiring. yamaha thoughtfully gave us a bit of extra to play with. the wiring goes from the switches into the headlamp shell, then loops out again, so there´s an extra 6" or so.

if you do extend, cut the wires in steps, not all in the same point. this means you don´t have a ball of tape in the middle of the wires when you join them again.

to feed the wires through, i use one of those sink plug chains made up of chrome balls. these feed through real easy. tape the wires to it and gently pull it through.

some of the fat bars reduce in diameter where they mount on the risers. if you can, get this type, as boring out the risers can be a bit hit and miss, and they´re expensive to replace if you cock it up.

No need to get any special tools to remove the wires from the connectors, just get a paper clip and flatten one end a little and use that to release the clips in the connector. This will give you more money to spend elsewhere on your bike.
