Oriental Express VIBRATION 2 Years, 11 Months ago
I LIKE IT, I LOVE IT, I WANT SOME MORE OF IT, but I can stand the vibration.
I have an 02 Midnight Star that I absolutely love. At 18,000 miles I had the engine totally beefed up with the Oriental Express Kit. It runs great and is even more fun to ride than before. After it was built up it ran great and had no more vibration than it did before the overhaul. I have put about 7,000 miles on it since and about 3,000 miles ago my wife said her back rest was vibrating and the passenger seat a little bit. Now it vibrates so bad she can't ride for more than 20 minutes. The vibration actually makes her numb and when she gets off her legs are unstable. I have also noticed my top Samson exhaust pipe has cracked from the vibration and is pulling away from the bracket. (It broke above the weld). I am now feeling the vibration in my seat, handle bars, floor boards and highway pegs mounted on the crash bar (engine guard).

I took it to the dealer that I bought it from, and that re-built it, to have the clutch cover removed and check for a problem there. I was there while the cover and the clutch assembly was off so I could crank it up to make sure the problem wasn't in the transmission. The vibration was still there. They have tried to tell me that is the price I have to pay for more power and it is normal. THEN WHY DIDN'T IT DO IT IN THE BEGINNING?

Can anybody HELP???????? All thoughts will be appreciated more then you will ever know. Ferman

Post edited by: Ferman, at: 2005/12/16 19:05

That's a tough one.

One area that is known to cause vibration problems is a leaking manifold. Try spraying some WD40 around the head to manifold and manifold to carb connections.

How the compression? Is it similar for both cylinders?

I agree with Doc, check the intake with the engine warm.

I agree also with Doc,

My bike had vibe problems and one of the things I found when I decided too fix the problem myself rather than bring it to the dealer one more time and let their bike quacks twiddle was a o-ring on the intake on the rear cylinder missing a piece. I did not find it with carb cleaner, starting fluid, wd40 I actually took it apart and there it was. I put the NAPA o-rings in, let me go get the number so you don't have to do a search......Took awhile, I thought I created a .txt file and I didn't, I wrote it down on a piece of paper. Anyway here isthe NAPA number

o-ring: 7272-136 or 727-2136
the first number is off this web site, the second number was on the box. This o-ring has a slightly larger diameter, to make it easier to install take a dremmel and remove the little stubs that hold the stock o-ring in place, I usually put a litle silicone sealant on the mating surfave tohold the o-ring in place while installing. You will also find it easier to install the intake if when you get one left hand bolt started is to take a hammer, put the handle inside the intake so you have more leverage to align the other hole. You'll seewhat I am talking about.

Heres some other numbers:

Spark Plugs: Autolite: 4164
NGKtockPR7EA-9,1 step hotter: DPR6EA-9,2 steps hotterPR5EA-9

I found other things contributing to my vibration also, Do a search on this site and you will find plenty of vibration post.

copper type high temperature silicone sealant is what I used to seal mine, didn't sand them down on a flat surface didn't change "O" rings. Hopefully this is your trouble, manifold leak. How bout leaking spark or ignition?

I tend to lean (no pun intended) towards the manifold leak, but, is there any chance that the motor mount bolts have worked their way loose?.

Been away for a few weeks, but I still have the same problem. Bike ran fine at one point then started to vibrate more and more. Vibrates more as it warms up. I just purchased a ported Manifold and new "Good n tight" tree bushings from Barons so I will hopefully get them installed soon and see what happens. I'm having trouble finding the Napa O rings so I might reuse the stock ones if they are still good. I would rather replace them though since one little nick in those O rings can cause big problems. Like someone said, An O ring brought down a Space Shuttle.

Withe o-rings all ya have to do if NAPA does not have them is to tell them to order them. You live in my area. When I went to the store there were none in the Tampa Bay area. The parts guy located 5 in Miami. I told him I wanted all of them. In about 2 days I had them. I would not use the old ones. By the way I tried to get the Stock ones from that sorry Barney's and the were going to have to speciaal order them, and the cost of one o-ring from them was more than the 5 I bought at NAPA. Barneys of Tampa Bay sucks!
