On my trip to TN got 47 going there and 45 coming home. (Figured all the rain made the difference! When I lost the rear cylinder - On the way to the dealer got around 20 . After the can of ringfree over the weekend we're back up to 42. But it's back to the dealer tonight for the rest of the testing. So who knows when I get it back what it will be!

Man, I must really ride my R* hard cause I get 38 to 40mpg. I have a windshield on most of the time but, all the guys I ride with say they get about the same mpg. highest I heard from anyone local was 47mpg when he did a trip up the coast and was crusin about 55mph most of the way. I don't know how you easterners do it at 54+ maybe its cause I'm fat

You guys do know you are figuring the MPG with wrong numbers don't you? Uncorrected speedometers / odometers. And you would have to be positive that you are working with the correct amount of gas. You HAVE to know exactly how much gas you started the test with. Just because you went 100 miles and only had to put 1 gallon in doesn't mean you're getting 100 MPG. You might have had more gas in there than you thought to begin with.

Completely drain the tank. Put in exactly 5 gallons. And run it till it's completely empty again. Do this for 3 or 4 tanks. Then you will know exactly how much gas is being used.

Of course you still have the odometer being off so then you have to guess how much to subtract from the uncorrected MPG.

Thought we could geta MPG debate going. Things have been pretty tame here lately.

Here's the way I do it I fill my tank to the rim reset my tripometer to 0, go for a ride till the reserve kicks in fill it to the brim take the amount I put in divided by the tripometer and there is your mpg ie: 170miles divided by 4.37gallons = 38.901601mpg. I consistantly get between 36 and 38mpg every tank. I don't understand how draining the tank completely empty has anything to do with it. Example if I have a qt. jar and fill it to the top with water then drink 1/2qt. how much water do you think it will take to fill the the jar? (God, I feel like I'm doing the SAT test in elementary school ) My tank will only hold so much gas just like a 1 qt jar will only hold 1 qt. Now lets say my calculations are off a bit I only got 4.3 gallons (spillage )that would be 39.534883mpg or if I was way off at only 4 gallons (Big spillage )that is 42.5mpg still way shy of the 54mpg or even 50mpg. Ok, I got to stop cuas me head hurst..

Yes there is some speedo error to take into consideration, but not enough for me to sweat. I'm the biggest boy here (that will at least admit it), and I ride with a fairly heavy hand, and I never drop below 40. 45 is more like it. 48 ain't out of the question. Smhowse, you must be standing on it all the time to get those low #'s. Windshield ain't helping matters. But hey, long as she puts a smile on your face, that's all that really matters. BB

OK guys, I can't figure out how to get mine that high either. I run high 30's to mid 40's, depending on my right hand. I too am a big guy, but I don't think hauling my fat butt around is good for killing 10-15 mpg. Oh well, if my main concern was mileage, I would've bought a hybrid! Happy Riding.

Hell...the best I've ever gotten is 35 MPG...always between 30 and 35, city or highway. And I have it leaned out for altitude (7,100 ft) and don't really have a heavy hand. I always try to ride with the RPMs no lower than 2500 and no higher than 3500. I think I may have even FINALLY gotten the jetting correct--I pulled the plugs yesterday after about 300 miles on a fresh set, and the back ones are dark gray with a little soot around the first few threads (they used to be coal black and totally sooty before rejetting) and the front plugs are tan/gray, so I'm not terribly rich...What gives?
