Handlebar wiring 2 Years, 11 Months ago

Got beach bars 36" wide and have dimples to run wiring through (got plenty of excess wire). Where do I disconnect the wires from? the headlight? or by the clutch levers? any other tips on changing handle bars would be appreciated.<br><br>Post edited by: draco, at: 2005/12/19 10:01

I disconnected mine at the controls. Best to take pics or do a diagram before disconnecting the wires. Be very careful. Some soldering experience necessary.
If you need detailed instructions, you can find it on the web (I may have at home if you need).
I used a string with a small weight on one end to feed a pull wire through but I've heard of guys using a vacuum cleaner to suck a piece of string through the bars.

Thank you Doc great tips! I knew I could rely on you
Hmmm soldering...feel confident but don't know what I'm looking at at this point.
I still need to take the handlebars, throttle controls off the stock handle bars, any tips on that? I also have risers the Baron's DT pull back that I don't think I can use with these beach bars. I'll run out of stock cable for sure? I think I'll have to put the stock risers back on.
Tips on throttle and grips? There is a weight in the stock handle bar throttle?

I believe that some of the connections in the controls are screwed on and others are solder. It's been a long time since I had my controls apart. I'm going to take them off over the Xmas holidays to get them chromed so I'll get 'familiarized' with them again.
The cap on right side grip screws off while the right side is a force fit. Both are plastic. The right side grip comes off when the control is split. It's easier to remove is the cables are loosened at the carb.
The left side grip .... use some WD40 (or compressed air) and a very thin screwdriver to get the grip off.
Yes, there was also a weight in my stock handlebar. I did not bother to try and remove it. For my Barons T bar, I cut a piece of stock round iron and welded it into the bar. Just make sure the length is shorter than where the wires enter the handlebar. I road a bit without the weights and after putting them in it seemed to have reduced the vibration a bit. You can also fill the void with #9 lead shot.
Check this out: http://www.freewebs.com/roadstarwarrior/radius_install_1of2.htm He chose to disconnet the connectors rather than at the controls. Your choice.
