Hey Doc, vaccum fuel pump 4 Years, 8 Months ago
Your the only one here that I know of that uses it.. got a question, Why did you decide to go with it rather than just using a new float setup and doing away with the (something else to go wrong) fuel pump altogether?

I was 'playing' around and ended up frying both my fuel pump and relay. So rather than buy an expensive Yammi pump, I bought a Puralator pump and regulator (still have it if anyone is interested). BTW .... you can also use some of the Subaru model pumps.

The Puralator makes a ticking noise all the time as there is no relay to shut if off. It worked fine but when someone discovered that you can use a vacuum pump (it also used in ultralight planes) I decided I could do away with all electronic pumps and move to something simpler.

Some time after, some else discovered that you could run pumpless by changing out the needle valve.

Why do I still run the pump? Because everything is hunky-dory and why mess with success..

Which one is better? Whichever one works for you. The needle valve seems to be working successfully so I probably would go in that direction as it eliminates the pump altogether.

Whew.

Thanks for the info Doc, I didn't know if it would effect anything else by loosing the pump(like fuel gauge, reserve, low fuel light etc) I think I'll start looking around for the for the float needle set for my carb.. less things to break down..

I still have my pump so this is second hand info but I have read where people have to hit reserve sooner because of the gravity feed. I think some have pulled the petcock out and cut a half inch or so off the main pickup tube to fix that. But like I said that's only what I read so don't take it as fact.

Hey Flashback,
I can tell you my experience with removing my pump was very aggrovating. I could not run wfo past 3rd without starving the carb. It also would do it running 2up on uphill grades. It didn't seem to matter what fuel level I had. I ended up putting the stock needle valve back in and relocating my pump under the side cover. I couldn't live up to my screen name without the pump. I believe some of us forget these are big girls and they like plenty of fuel. I wish you good luck in whatever you choose to do.

Those are for a Mikuni but I don't know if those are the same. It the same for our carb, it's a Mikuni but there are different pilots for them.

I'd head off to Suzuki dealer and pick one up.

That vacuum pump sounds like a good way to go Doc. If it's good enough to fly an ultralight plane, then it definitely should work reliably on a Flyin' Roadie on the ground!
What did the aviation vacuum pump cost you?

.... ...hmmm, Even if your electric pump crapped-out, Would a guy be able to still "limp" it home, or would ya be lookin' for a Bic pen to bypass the fuel pump?
