oil level 1700 4 Years, 8 Months ago
Good Morning all,
The service tech at the dealership tells me my sticky valves are due to too much oil. He said Yamaha recomends a lower oil level (this is after he accused me of putting too much in it.) Has Yamaha issued new guidlines of specifications for oil level. New dipstick would be nice!

Law - I am not aware of any "official" change in the guidelines from Yamaha, but as noted in the article posted by Pop, too much oil is shown to be a contributing cause of SVS.

I have been running exactly 4 quarts at the recommendation of the fine folks here in this forum and have not encountered any valve related problems - Praise God!

I agree that the dipstick design leaves something to be desired!!

Im going to write Yamaha and ask for it in writing since this to me would be an ammendment to the owner manual. I'll let you know what kind of response I get.

They do say what is in the manual is the MAXIMUM oil but that halfway up the hash marks just happens to be 4 us qts...and my manual says same procedure as the bulletin and they do say in the manual the oil level should be BETWEEN the max and lower level and do not overfill

And check oil level WITHOUT screwing the dipstick in

BUT if you fill it to the maximum you are overfilling and MAY get SVS..

Yes they should say the max is halfway up the hashmarks and and it is 4 US QTS

When you follow the manual and it creates a problem with the bike that tells me there is something wrong. I personaly don't think it's an oil problem but a fuel delivery problem. Unfortunatly I have to follow their recomendations to keep them accountable.

Yes and half the time its the dealers overfillin the bikes....

Although it did'nt happen with my R*

After trading my Honda Shadow in on a brand new HARLEY... confident that the new Evolution engine was somethin else...

Pulled over for a cigarette to show my buds the new bike...

Parked it and after admiring the newness...noticed a BIG pool of oil under the bike...

YEP comin out the air filter...(pcv hose) checked the oil in the tank and right to the brim....OVERFILLED by the dealer.....

To begin a long experience with dealer incompetence
