No start - need some help. 10 Months ago
Hey guys, this question is for my brother's 01 roadie. He has been riding it without issue and one morning, it just won't start. It cranks with lots of power but acts like it is flooded or something and doesn't want to turn over. He has tried it with the choke on/off, has tried cranking for 5+ seconds at a time, has tried draining the gas out of the float bowl, and has tried to give the throttle a little twist as he is cranking which makes it want to die even more.

Could it be a spark plug? That's what I was going to recommend to him tomorrow. I've never had a plug go bad yet, so that would just be a guess on my part.

He doesn't have internet so I'm asking on his behalf. Any ideas?

Thanks guys

I had this happen to me the other day, even tried push starting it. Something told me to turn the key of then back on and sure enough, it started right up. Some how the key was not engaging the ignition system. I know it sounds overly simple, but it's worth a mention.

Pull the outside plugs and make sure they are not gas/carbon fouled. If they are spray them with some starting fluid and use a hand held torch to burn the either and any carbon off the plugs.

Don't twist the throttle when cranking, especially with the enrichener on. Wait til if fires to twist the throttle or you could flood it. The same problem can occur when really hot too, but since you said it was in the morning that would eliminate a heat issue.

Like what was said, check for spark and also make sure the fuel pump is running.

Driving down the street from my house the other afternoon and come to a 4 way and stop. The bike dies. It's making a funny noise. Right where the fuel pump is. It won't restart. Walk home a get a big rubber hammer to bang on the side of the starter. Call my buddy so we can push it home; 8 blocks. He pulls up and tells me to try and start it. I hear the funny noise and notice that I have the gas turned off! Can you say "senior moment"?

A bad plug wouldn't make it not start. It'd make it run rough. I'd say you're looking for a single point of failure in either the ignition system, or the fuel system. Since the float bowls are filled, it's getting at least to the carb.

As others said, check for spark, you dont have to pull the plugs if you have an extra plug and wires laying around. Just hook the plug up to the coil and ground out on the engine. No spark @ 2 plugs = bad coil pack, but the bike would chugga-chugga over and maybe even start and run crappy as hell. No spark on all of them, I'd say the solenoid is either unplugged or grounded out.

Before you go through the trouble of checking for spark though, what about the choke, is it working properly? Did you try venting the tank (pop the gas cap) (vapor lock)?
