to sell or not 10 Months ago
I am the second owner of a 99 RS. I have enjoyed riding it for 65k miles since owning it without any problems whatsoever. I have learned to do the very basic maintainence (oil chg., tire chg., brake pads, fuel filter, air filter, and maybe a few others. I am new to motorcycle mechanics and willing to learn. With 90k miles on it I am looking now for guidance from all of you here. Shall I sell or not. What are the problems that tend to occur with this mileage? Is there anyone in the northern Va area or with in a ride that has experience that is willing to share some knowledge and time some afternoon to show me a few things that I may need to do. I would rather keep the bike if possible if I can learn how to work on it to maintain. I am not afraid to get my hands greasy etc. Your responses will be appreciated.

With the proper maintenance, The R* will run for a very long time. If you enjoy the bike, KEEP IT!!! You don't post much, Do you?

+1..., however, you could quick sell it right now without putting any money into it for $3k to $3500...add $1500.00 to your sale and upgrade to an 04 or 05 with low miles and be further ahead, just a thought

If you've put 65k on it, just keep doin' what you've doin'!! You seem to have it all figured out. There are several guys here with 6 figures on their R*s with no major issues.

Hey if I had 90k on a bike that still looks good and never let me down I wouldn't sell. Thats a keeper right there. Instead of you asking us how to keep it going I think we should ask you how to get that far without a hitch

I was thinking the same thing...

BTW, mine is about to make that magic 100,000 mark. I am presently at 96674 and mine is a 2003. And she like a Timex. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking!!!

Ooooo, don't say "Hitch"...

But, in all seriousness, she does more herself on her bike than most guys here...

I think that's simply fantastic...

Keep up the good work.

Re:to sell or not 10 Months ago
nope I haven't posted much, too busy riding ...........lol. Anyway, seriously I really do want to learn more about how to do my own mechanical work. I bought this bike from my Volvo mechanic who couldn't ride anymore due to injuries. I trusted him with my car and wasn't let down after 15yr. of services so basically bought his bike without hesitation. I didn't really learn till afterward the reputation of the steadfast motors in these bike (just like the old Volvo's) I have been down on the bike so there is some damage on the front right end, but, nothing that has kept me from riding on it soon after. Since I haven't spent much time on the sight I haven't figured out how to tell if there are any members even close to me. I wonder if there are any maintainence days coming up soon. I'd volunteer to host one, but, since I am without knowledge even a yard to host that won't work. Are there members close to northern va? Oh yeah, perhaps the secret to my high mileage is I don't "ride it like I stole it" as they say. I ride it to enjoy both the bike and intention to come back home with all my body parts where I started out with them.

Well done Patricia,
I just recently got my Roadie. I hope to have a keeper as well. I guess a lot of that will depend on how good my maintenance habits are. My wife rode my bike the other day for the first time. I've got a feeling we may be getting a second Roadstar

Now that is a smart woman! I have never riden my bike like I stole it. I ride like it cost me a fortune and I want it to last as long as possible!
If I lived in your area I would be happy to help. 90,000 and keeping up on oil changes, the other things I can think of are, the transfer case fluid should be changed, the front steering bearings should be packed, the swingarm bearings are a sealed bearing but should be checked for play, and I would assume that whom ever is changing the tires would let you know if your wheel bearings are getting loose. The spark plugs are another thing. Do you know when those were done last? Other then that if the bike is running good I would hang on to it. People won't give you much for a bike with 90,000 miles, even these guys on the forum will offer minimum, so I say hang on to it and just ride it till she gives out and then rebuild it and do it again.
