FI for Roadies from Yamaha? Any chance? 1 Year, 2 Months ago
Since the new Roadies have FI I'm thinking that if Yamaha has a functioning brain in their marketing department they would offer an "inexpensive" retro fit kit. Think about it, all of us with pre-2008 Roadies would probably buy it if it was in say the $500-1000 range and was a straight bolt on. Talk about making owners happy and getting them in the fold to buy another Yamaha down the road! Of course they will see it that we should buy a new Roadie.

This is an exciting idea for those of us who like FI, but were talking Yamaha here. So if it does retrofit, I'm betting more like $1500.00 ++. Hope I am wrong...

We probably need to hit our friends up at rswarrior.com and find out what parts are involved. I am interested in knowing if the system can be remapped (for performance with aftermarket goodies).

I'm betting the new FI wouldn't work on the older models so they would have to come up with a new unit. $$$$$$$$$$$$$

some quick answers from our friends at rswarrior.com:

From Churchkey:
Hello Gram, Have not checked in at the Road Star site in awhile so I'm not up to speed on the Road *'s but I can give you some info on the Warrior.

Warrior's use 2 throttle bodies (one per cylinder)with the injectors mounted under the throttle plates. Each cylinder operates independently of the other using a manifold pressure sensor for each injector. The manifolds are not connected in any way & need to remain that way.

Warriors do not use O2 sensors, its basically a mass air flow system using open loop technology . The system does not have the ability to automatically adjust fuel mixture with the exception of pre set parameters using engine oil temp, ambient air temp & cylinder temp along with throttle position (throttle position sensor) as the basis for fuel mixture.

suggest checking the ECU to see if wire #27 & wire #29 are a loop & connect to each other. If so you may be able to adjust the fuel mixture using the following info. http://www.rswarrior.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=33867

Hope this helps.

From nititgye:
Hey Gram. It has one throttle body per cilinder, and it doesn't have O2 sensors. The injectors are just bellow the TB on the intake port. The most used FI module to reprogram it is the Dynojet PowerCommander, do a search on Perfect Install and you'll find out some things about it.

Hope this helps

They won't be able to tell us specifics on the Road Star, but they can open our eyes about Yamaha did FI on the Warrior. I really like what I am hearing here, no Oxygen sensors, throttle body injection with seperate throttle bodies for each cylinder (that will solve the front cylinder lean problem below torque peak).

The description for the Warrior FI is Twin-bore FI with twin air cleaner

No mention of this in the description for the R* so I believe there is a different FI for the R*

And do ya think Yamaha will be content with you upgrading instead of a complete trade in???

I think with research you could probably match a intake system from another bike. As an example, you can run a Suzuki GSXR 600 or Ninja ZX-12R FI throttle body setup on a Porsche 914.

That's the easy part. The hard part would be progarmming the ECU for the FI.

If the cost is around $1500 or more, I'll stick to pulling out the choke at start up and pushing half way in while I put on my helment and gloves. About what 30 seconds at most.. Doesn't seem worth it IMHO.
