Yes, Carbon can be an issue with these bikes (SVS). Be thankful your dealer is so eager to help, many people find it's like pulling teeth to get help from their dealers. BB

they told me that since 04 with the size of the piston going to 5in that the area of oil return ports has been reduced ..thus lowering the oil level to3.5 qts is helping in other bikes

Just moved up from my 1100 Shadow to an '07 Roadstar - 1st observations: lots of valve noise, and very cold-natured...hearing some rear-end whine but read in another thread it may be a belt tension issue...will check that. Will also change to Mobil 1 Syn when I change oil in the morning. Any thoughts on the cold-running or the valve noise? Any other stuff for a new owner to know about?

Thanks!

Hey Chubmanjoe, good to see you on this site. I too moved up from a Shadow 1100. Mine was a bullet proof 1996. You sound just like me! The first things I noticed on my Roadie was the valve noise and the cold nature of it. Also, believe it or not, I too had the rear end whine. And yes, it could be the belt tension, but just a heads-up, mine was the lower stock plastic belt guard rubbing on the belt. I added a couple of washers and that pulled it away from the belt far enough not to rub. Might be worth checking it out. Oh yes, if you are checking the belt tension, I believe you should grab it in the middle and be able to twist it about 45 degrees. If so, then it is adjusted properly.

Good luck to you! Keep asking questions, I'll try to help.

Jeff

I want to thank you guys for the replies - I'm feeling better about the oddities...belt is quiet (washers worked) - got behind and the syn goes in this weekend...still cold-natured, but I'm letting it idle about 30 secs @ 1/2 choke, and nursing it for the first 1/2 mile...overall, a great bike!!

I sold my 96 1100 Shadow and also got an 07 R*. Had most of the same concerns originally, especially with the noise levels. Only have about 1800 miles on it now but went to the mobile 1 at 600 miles and that made a big difference for me. So far I love the R, most of my miles are hiway and to not be blown around by all the truck traffic is a BIG plus. You will find the people here are great at offering help and there is a ton of knowledge here that they are happy to share. Good luck with the new bike and congrats!!
