There was another thread here about when you knew you wanted a motorcycle.
When I was around 6 there was a guy down the street who had a big ole HD.
One day when I was staring at it, he came out of his house, smiled at me and asked me if I wanted to sit on it. I never forgot him or his bike.
To this day if I'm riding down the rode and a little kid is looking at me I'll smile and wave at them. That's the only time I'll wave first. Same if I'm off my bike.
That simple act by a biker 52 years ago started me on the journey I'm still on.

When it is hot out we will often ride to an ice cream shop across the river. While we sit outside in the shade and eat our ice cream invariably some kids will wander over and take a look at the bikes. I always offer to let the little ones sit on the bike. The best part is when they reach for the throttle (I have 17" apes) and make "vroom" sounds. Everyone enjoys it and it puts "bikers" in a good light.

It's distracting to wave all the time, I will wave back most of the time but I don't initiate the wave.

I used to get so mad when people would not wave to me! I now don't even look at them when I am waving...this way I don't know if they wave at me or not so I don't have to get mad ...seems to work so far!

I wave, even to people on the other side of the highway. Which is sometimes confusing for the cagers around me. Did I just shoo a bug off? Did I just flip someone off? Am I lane changing? Saying "hi" to ghosts?! It's a mystery!!

If you don't wave back to me when I give you two fingers down, if I see you on the way back, I'm waving like m-f'in Forrest Gump to you. You know it.

I remeber back in the 70's the "wave" was your left arm extended at a 45% angle and a fist. Does anyone remeber that?

I ride a Harley, and I wave to all bikers. If they don't wave to me, I don't friggin care. As a former Road Star owner and rider, I understand the unspoken tension between metric and American. Ultimately, it's about the fact that we ride and we recognize others enjoying the hobby that we all have in common... whether we wave or not.

Stereotypically it seems that the general opinion is that if you ride a metric and don't wave, you're just focusing on the road. But if you ride a Harley and don't wave, you're an asshole.

You guys need to stop the stereotyping and desensitize yourselves a little and get over the fact that not everyone is going to wave back at you. Who friggin cares!

Yep, I sure do. I posted a message on this thread earlier about that very thing. It was sometimes confused with a similar greeting of the period. Remember the Black Power movement of those times? Folks supporting that movement would greet one another with the same uplifted arm and clenched fist.

We're a couple of old bastards, aren't we ? ? ? ?

Sir, if you don't friggin' care, then why comment at all?

I've come from a '77 XLCH, and later a '90 FLHTC. My '09 Road Star has no equal, none.

Well sir, if you correctly read what I posted, you'd see that I said who friggin cares about the fact that everyone isn't gonna wave at you. I do care about getting my opinion out about oversensitivity on the subject matter, which is why I posted on this thread.
