Scratchin my head- need help 9 Months, 1 Week ago
Stopped at a stop sign and my 07 RS died. Would not start except at full throttle. But only sputtered and black smoke from pipes, smelled rich.

Bummer,
Well Black smoke is usually to much gas (hope you did not accidentally put diesel in it)
I would pull the plugs and see how black they are.
Is it electronic fuel injection or carb'd?
If it is electronic I would take it to the stealer, if it has a carb I would read the tech section on jetting and start on that process.
Mine is carb so I put a adjustable needle and started going down in main jet size till I got close, then I adjusted the needle height and the mixture screw until I got it like I wanted it.
Others who are far smarter than me on their dumbest day will chime in and give you a hand, be patient, this site has a great bunch of riders

Yup,when its running ok then all the sudden dies and will only refire at WOT emiting blk smoke thats a stuck float or dirt go in needle and seat not allowing it to fully seat overflowing the flaot bowl/carb.

Could simply try gently smaking the flaot bowl with a small wrench etc to see if that will dislodge any dirt from needle & seat or dislodge a stuck float etc.

If thats doesnt work you will then need to remove flaot bowl to see whats going on.

If you dont find any dirt and float doesnt seems to be sticing having full travel up/down id at the very least install a new needle and seat to ensure its seating properly along with also properly adj float lvl too.

Could also chk float itself for cracks that would allow it to take on fuel so float would drop in flaot bowl which would also cause same flooding over issues.

BTW,if you do find dirt in the carb replace fuel filter even if it's not that old.

Afterthought, you didnt accidentially leave the choke/cold enricher on did ya?

Maybe choke cable or choke linkage is stuck making chokce still be on.

Scott

Plugged PMS. Vacuum line is loose or leaking.
