TPS Guru 9 Months ago
I am getting what seems like the rev limiter dropping a cylinder. I have seafoamed, adjusted the carb, checked electrical connections, changed plugs (new), pulled the pipes looking for carbon build-up and looked in the plug holes for build-up. Can't find any thing.

I removed the carb to check the TPS as per the tech article:
Check your TPS:
• With the TPS cable disconnected from the bike’s harness, you’ll see that the wires from the TPS are Blue, Yellow, and Black. Using an Ohmmeter (the digital type is best), measure the resistance between the terminals for the Blue and Black wires. It should be between 4k ~ 6k Ohm at 68-degrees F. Temperature IS a factor, so you’ll find it will vary some with different temps. Throttle position is NOT a factor in this measurement.
• Measure the resistance between the Yellow and Black terminals, with the throttle closed. If it does not fall within the desired range, then by loosening the M4 screws holding the TPS to the bracket, you can rotate the TPS until it shows the correct reading on the Ohmmeter. With the right setting established, retighten the screws. So far, I've found that every TPS I've installed has needed a setting of 650 to 675-Ohm. If you measure the resistance between the Yellow and Black terminals while opening the throttle from idle to full open, you should see a progressive change from the set point to a maximum between 4k ~ 6k-Ohm.

I had a yellow to black reading of 740 and a blue to black of 5.78K. I adjusted the TPS to get a 640 reading with closed throttle, but only get WOT reading on yellow/black of 3.77K. Can't get near the max reading at WOT.

Looking for answers to the TPS problem and if there might be some other cause to the cylinder laying out at low RPM's. Throttle cables are really close( as in touching) one post on the front coil. Have moved them, but not put the bike back together yet.

Let me know what you guys think. Would like to get her back together this afternoon.
John

It's not your TPS my 05 reads about the same as yours and the bike runs great. I very well could be the cables others have had that problem too.

Hey Curt,
I think you were right. Just didn't know how particular those TPS things were.

I adjusted it back to where it has been for the last 27000 miles and locked it there. I made clearance between the throttle cable and the front coil wires. I also found a loose connector on the rear coil where my tach shared a post. Fixed that. Cleaned everything else and it seems to be fine. Took it for a 50 mile ride and didn't act up once.

Thanks for the reply.

Re:TPS Guru 9 Months ago
John, you need to read the instructions again. If your maximum resistance is 5,780 ohms as you stated then the closed throttle reading needs to be between 751 and 867 ohms. The closed throttle reading should be between the total resistance multiplied by 0.13 - 0.15. ie. 5780 X 0.13 = 751.40 and 5780 X 0.15 = 867.0.

You won't get the max reading at open throttle because the max reading is a measurement of the entire resistor in the TPS. The wiper (pickup) doesn't traverse the entire length of the resistor.

Hope this helps.

Scott you are correct. BTW the damn thing never stay set when you tighten the screws so you have to play with it to get it where you want it.

Mine's the same way Curt. I try to shoot for the middle of the range.

I did notice one thing a few years back - when mine was off a little I would get a little extra blink from the engine light just after it had gone off. I readjusted it and the blink went away.

That wild if I do another one I will have to look for that. Both my 05 and 07 drove me nuts and I was shooting for the middle also.
