sink basket baffles.. 4 Years, 8 Months ago
|
|
FYI, hi folks.. I made some sink strainer baffles for my straight pipes this morning, I read about it somewhere anyway, they sure quieted the bike down.. but also lost a very noticible amount of acceleration ...enough that I think I will take them out and go back to being straight..

Did my roadhouse slip-ons that way but didn't notice a difference on my acceleration.
You probably read that in the tech tips here. Oh well nothing ventured nothing gained.

yep, Greysnake, I didn't think it would change it that much.. but I guess when you think about it, I probably reduced the flow by 25 percent or more.. your roadhouse pipes are probably a lot larger inside diameter.. my pipes are 1 3/4 all the way from end to end, anyway, it only cost me about 3 bucks. guess I'll try something else as soon as i figure out what something else is..

Did you do this .... http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/51/105/
... and did you try enlarging some of the holes. If you used the strainer 'stock' then you probably had too much backpressure.

Thanks Doc, That is exactly what I did with the exception of enlarging the center hole, I didn't remember that step.. ..I,m waiting for it to cool down a little then I,ll give that a try..You have any other ideas or designs up your sleeve..? I thought about taking a strip of metal say about 3/4 wide and 2ft long and bending it into a bunch of "s" curves and popping it in there, kinda like those ribbon things in a water heater flue.. think it would work.?

There are a number of members, including myself, who have manufactured their own baffles.
Exhaust tuning, which includes baffles, is an exact science which shade tree mechanics have to do by trial and error. I had to make varous versions and to 'tune' mine to get the optimum sound and seat of the pants perforance.
What you want is for the exhaust gases to be restricted in their flow (to reduce noise and increase torque) but not so much that you lose too much power.
I would suggest you start with something and then refine. Your idea might work. You could also try to drill one hole in each leg parallel to the flow of the gases but offest from the previous one. In other words, you want to impede the direct flow of the gas through the pipe but not restrict the flow to much.

Doc, went over to your site and saw how yours are done.. seems like the washer in the center is the key to deflecting the gas, don't have access to a welding rig but maybe I can get around that,, If I were to do something like that, it would mean that exhaust gases would be coming into contact with the inside of the outer pipe, is there much chance of them turning blue that far back..also is that tape you used the same thing that they use in the HVAC business? (looks like it).

You are correct. The restriction deflects the gases which mutes the sound but I have enough holes in the baffle that the gases are not restricted too much. I could have built more 'chambers' which would further mute the pipes but then it becomes complicated.
I've had my baffles in for some time and had no coloring of the pipe.
Good eye on the tape.

Well, I may scrap the basket idea, as the concept that I'm getting here is not to restrict the exhaust as much as to deflect it..I see the basket as being little more than a restriction..thanks again Doc..

Hey Flashback,
Not sure of your budget. But I was looking into trying these over the winter.

Not sure if anyone here has tried them? If so please chime in and let us know.
