I wish I had seen this earlier cause now I'm out a bike , unemployed , and
looking at about $1000.00 if I bring it to the shop
At the dealer today he printed out the cost for pulley , middle drive shaft
nut , conical spring washer = $487.98 and that not all that is needed for the job !

Mine is an 06 also and does not have the lockwasher. When I went to the 31T pulley I had to use the stock setup which is a heavy bellevile (spring) washer and the stake nut. I could not use the lockwasher supplied with the pulley because the spline did not stick out from the pulley surface. I lathered the nut up with red loctite, put the washer on with the crown to the nut side, and tightened the hell out of it and re-staked the nut which was in a different position from the stock pulley.
I'll still keep an eye on it

Wow, I thought it was just a pre 06 problem too. I think I'm just gonna take mine apart and put red loctite on it just to be safe. A little preventative medicine can't hurt.

2 questions:
Should I replace the old lock washer or can it be reused?
Anyone know the torque spec?

If yours is like mine, There is no "Tab" lockwasher, Just the heavy spring washer which MUST be installed correctly (crown side tword the nut) Not enough spline sticks out to grab a tab-lockwasher.

I don't have the torque spec here, The book is over my buddy's shop

I don't know if it's a wide spread problem or not but my '06 did work loose in 2010 and at the time the bike had around 44,000 miles on it.
I was able to catch it before it came off the shaft. Re-Torqued and staked both sides. So far so good.

I did a how to on this in the Maint section. my book said 61 Lbs, close enough, its not a vital torque area. It is vital everyone do the maint on this. I would not trust once a year. I would RED Threadlock it and forget it.

I have an 07 and it came loose from factory. The tab looked like it was bent down in both places but looked as if it loosened on its own.

I can only suspect because I installed a Burnett clutch, so now the tranny is really connected to the engine and this allows enough backlash to put enough stress on the nut to loosen the tabs and let the nut back off. Thats a shot in the dark highly speculative.

Whatever. Get the threadlocker on it before YOU have to deal with Yamaha, they are not friendly and this will be my Last Yamaha, I'll be moving over to an American made bike like Victory. The ONLY American made bike. Sorta.
