bike over heated at lewiston border 8 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I had a great weekend 12 of us rode around lake ontario BUT at the lewiston border it was busy ,very slow and we turned our bikes off i walked mine the last 20 mins or so tried to start it when it was my turn to see the border guard and tried to turn over but would not start and i smelled gas so i pushed it to the guard and pushed it over the border and way up to a parking area we were told 95 degress to 105 where we were waiting . we waited 10 mins and it finally started and away we went . NO problems after that we stayed in oswego for the night . My question is about it damaging the engine ???? i was told by a machanic the piston over heat and expand and until they cool down the bike would not start YOUR THOUGHTS ? anyoine else had this problem my bike is a 2003 air cooled roadstar

Would it turn over or was is locked up?

Locked up: and smelled like gas more than likely your needle stuck and allowed too much fuel in the engine. Possibly hydrolocked which is possibly fatal if it happens to fire on one of the cyliders.

Not locked up: and smelling like gas could be a classic vapor lock from the heat and shutting the engine down.

And don't even get me started on the ethanol thing. If you HAVE to use it get some lubricant in that gas tank such as Marvel Mystery oil or whatever to keep that needle from sticking.

Just my immediate thoughts.....

When you smelled gas did you see it flowing from your carb area? Another possibility is your carb puked (look up puke or puking on the forum). What you describe sounds common - hot day, hot bike, bike off, restart tough with gas smell.

Sounds like to me there was some carb puking and it was just flooded. I know when it happens to mine the smell of fuel is strong and it's tough to start. I usually end up pulling the choke and it fires right up. If you gave the throttle a twist when you were trying to start it I'll almost bet is was just flooded.

I usually only get carb puking in the summer heat, so I suppose that the temps up there were indirectly a cause, but I seriously doubt the bike was "overheating".

Just my 2 cents.
