Oil Change 4 Years, 8 Months ago
I swear I think Sears and the folks at Yamaha must have some kind of agreement that every 17mm box end wrench sold at Sears must generate a royalty to Yamaha!

I tried every 17mm tool in my box but not even one would do the job of getting the front oil plug out. Finally broke down and rode to Sears for the special tool (kinda like the special bolt on the passing lights I guess). $20 for the non-Craftsman set of wrenches. (

The single Craftsman 17mm box end wrench was $13 so I had to spring for the extra $6 for the "Companion" branded the kit of 10 knuckle-busters for $19.

Main point is oil change was easy once I finally got the right tool and I feel good knowing the bike has top quality synthetic pumping around keeping everything moving like it should.

Anyone used the K&N filter? I bought it thinking it would do a better job, but it is expensive. Is there a difference?

I use either the Purolator One or Super Tech filters depending on if I am the Auto store or Walmart when I think of them and have a couple spare bucks in my pocket The K&N is crazy expensive by comparison and not, IMHO, worth the difference.

The K&N oil filter at 25 bones is a total rip-off!
I just use the NAPA Gold oil filter and change it and the oil often. Affinia is a well known oil filter maker, and they make Napa's filters.
The K&N is not worth the high cost in my opinion.
Changing your OIL gets rid of the fine contamination that even a high-priced oil filter can't catch!

I went to K-Mart a bought the ST7317 and it costs $2.42 . I can't find Mobil 1 V-Twin oil any where. I settled for Spectro Gold V-Twin synthetic at $9.95 /qt.

It works Great.....

I changed to the Mobil 1 V twin oil and put on a K&N filter, I know it is more expensive than some of the alternates $13 from Autozone. My reasoning was the Yamaha filter is just not a good quality and the alternates have a much better quality, however the only vendor with a valid cross reference for the Roadstar was K&N. The Purolator, Mobil1 and the SuperTech do not list and indeed if you call the vendors will not recommend for use. Since my star is still under warranty I want to be able to show I used a recommended equivalent. Once the bike is off warranty the Purolator is getting my vote.

By the way you can get Mobil 1 V twin synthetic at Autozone (you usually have to search high and low and sometimes ask at the counter) I always get foxed looking for a silver Mobil 1 bottle but the V twin oil comes in a black bottle. VIP auto stores in the northeast also carry it.

The K&N is a good filter but I think it's kinda the same as buying Levis brand jeans. Your paying extra for the name and advertising. But it will work just fine so you're good to go

Not if your happy with the way it works and feel you're protecting your motor well. For myself I run a Bosch filter. Cost about 4 bucks if you catch it on sale. But don't worry about a couple extra bucks. Buy what you trust.

Yes...the PureOne filter is a great filter and costs about $4...the SuperTech is a good filter and costs $2.42...assuming you change your oil and filter at the same time (I do) the extra $8-10 is better spent on gas for riding

JM2C of course.
