tire replacement 8 Months ago
I am going to put a Metzler on the front before I park my Roadie for the winter. I have 17,000 kms, or about 11k miles on the original Dunlops. Front is definitely looking worn, but the back still looks very good. Lots more tread on the back than the front. Perhaps poor inflation to blame for the shorter life of the front tire. Anyway, I'm wondering if I need to change both at the same time if I'm changing brands, or can I run the rear Dunlop until it needs a new Metzler? I'm likely only looking at another 5k kms anyway. Will it affect the handling if I mix tire brands? thanks woody

OK, thanks. I only wondered because I changed to Pireli tires on my Virago and noticed a huge difference in handling, but I changed both at the same time. I expect the Metzler to handle better than the Dunlop, though I can't complain about the original tire. thanks again

I don't mix brands. If I need to get sideways I want them both to break loose at the same time. I also like the wet traction to be about the same. Usually I can get twice the miles out of the front, but I stick to the same brand and model unless I change both.

Mixing brands happens all the time and I havent known of anyone having catastrophic problems and I do work for a dealer. I personally change both tires at the same time. New tires even of the same brand handle so much better that I justify the expence and donate the spares to friends who cant afford new shoes.

I replaced my rear Dunlop with a new Metz until I could afford to replace my front also, didn't notice anything ill handling from it,was very impressed when I did put the new Metz on the front, great tires but no don't think you will have a problem mixing brands either

Why bother putting a new tire on if you are going to park it for the winter? I would wait till just before the next riding season starts and get the new one then. No point in letting it dry rot over the winter and that will give you time to watch for great buys over the winter.

Man, that Curt is right on the money with his advice. Park her for the winter, tweak on her a bit, watch for some off season sales and save a few bucks on a new set of treads. Smart Man!
