One of my carbed R*s is running just perfectly, and with around town and highway running, I average right at 45.
The other isn't totally dialed in just yet, but I'm still working on it.
With FI, you have a computer controlled map, which can self-adjust, there's no reason why it shouldn't deliver at least the same mpg and power as a carbed bike.
Only if the program (map) is not state-of-the-art and up-to-snuff should it underpeform in any dimension. FI is simply inherently superior... but only if sufficiently engineered.
==================
Then why did yami state 36mpg est fuel mileage for 08 R* with EFI?
Maybe yami didn't take the time to fully dial in the FI for the R* because from yami's est 36mpg for thier FI R* it doesnt beat a properly dialed in carb'd R* when it comes to mpg which has been shown here in RSC.
A few wks back i remember reading a post here in RSC where an FI R* was getting 28-30mpg with oxy sensores hooked up!
Must have been a very agressive rider or the FI setup was having issues of some sort like not getting proper info from oxy sensors and going onto limp mode where it will run pig rich to ensure ya dont run too lean damaging motor when in limp mode.
Scott
A Carb'd bike should not beat same bike/motor with EFI but it does in the case of the R*.

2001 carbed model here, Just put two tanks of non-ethanol fuel through mine, with a passenger, on two lane roads to International Falls and back. 50.1 mpg on first fill and 49.3 on the second fill.
That first tank was with a normal dose of Techron just because it was due.
The bike has been running 46 to 50 all summer long, 7500 miles since June.

Absolutely right Scott! Mine will drop to as little as 35 mpg with some ethanol blends.

We who are getting 45 or better have performed some pretty serious Stage 1 enhancements of the intake, ignition and exhaust. I run a K&N universal filter, SpeedPro High-Flow intake manifold and a V&H 2 into 1 Pro-Pipe exhaust, with a Dyna 3000 ignition unit. Maybe I should be getting 45. These FI R*s are still running stock airboxes and restrictive exhausts, aren't they?
Any of you FI guys opened up the intake and exhaust to let it breathe?

The most noticeable difference between carb and FI is the ease of starting when it is really cold. Mine will start quickly in all weather and I don't have to fiddle with a choke. No positioning of the throttle or tweaking required. Turn on the key, check for the neutral light push the button briefly and it is running. Gas mileage is back to 43 mpg as long as I can keep my twitchy wrist under control.

Mine consistently gets 40mpg around town and 48-50 on the highway. Works for me!

Who can find non ethanol fuel these days. I run 70 mph and get as good as 50 mpg with 10% ethanol.
Well I guess i can take a picture of the pump for you Curt the next time I fill. Says "non-oxygenated".
