Bike just stopped running while on ride... 7 Months, 1 Week ago
I was out for a ride this weekend and I had just filled the tank from about a fourth full. I rode about twenty miles and while cruising at about 65 mph the bike just died. I moved to the shoulder and tried to restart the bike and it would not start. I was getting ready to call a tow truck and tried it a couple more times and it sputtered and I had to work the throttle and it finally fired off and was fine from then till I got home. The next morning getting ready to go to work and the bike was having trouble firing off. It was running fine and now I am having trouble starting it, any ideas on what the problem might be?

I'm thinking either the fuel pump or bad gas.

Have you made any repairs or changes to the bike lately? Does the fuel pump sound like it is clicking when you turn the key and kill switch to on after it has sat a while? Did you fill up at a different station than you normaly use?

i would check in this order if it has no problem cranking but don't want to fire

1. make sure the fuel pump is working corectly (it may be weak)

2. check the fuel filter and make sure you have flow at the petcock

3. make sure the tank is venting

4. seafoam the gas and clean the carb

5. make sure the carb is letting fuel into the motor (maybe a stuck closed/ pluged up float valve)

I have made no repairs to the bike and I always fill up at the same Chevron. Should I try a higher grade of fuel or could it be a battery issue? Like I said earlier once it starts it runs fine... Can I get Seafoam at any auto parts store?

Yes on seafoam. U could have filled up soon after they got new gas also and could be trash knocked loose in their tank and could be getting stuck in filter and running out of gas because of that.

Spray some Deep Creep seafoam into the carb and let it sit a bit then fire it up and ride it hard.

How long has it been since your fuel filter was changed? Might do that. I'd drain your gas tank and refill with fuel from a diferent gas station like suggested before, just to see if it is the gas. Try the cheapest route first before running to a mechanic. They will eat your lunch for sure. This forum will help you as much as possible in order to keep you from having to go to a mechanic, unless absoultely necessary.

Exact same thing happened to me. I thought it was bad gas. Next day started checking, and my air filter had gotten clogged with bugs, bike was getting minimal air. I have the big air kit on mine with an open filter. So you might want to check the air filter also.
