Need Help - Nuked Tranny 7 Months, 1 Week ago
I am on an a several day MC ride on a rented HD RKC. I nuked my tranny on my Roadie and need advice. Here'w what happened....

I flatbed towed my 2003 Midnight Star from CO to VA. It was in gear, wheel chocked and had 3 straps on each side....very well secured. When I went to roll it off the trailer, she binds up in the tranny after rolling back 2 feet, even in neutral. I started her up, ran her through the gears and worked the clutch to make sure the clutch was working and was not sticking.

When I dropped it in 3rd gear, I hear a loud grinding sound and immediately killed it.

I ended up renting an RKC for the trip, which I had to leave for only a few hours later. I will be back Sunday and need to get the Roadie fixed.

Here's much hunch....

I do not think this bike had the circlip work done and I think the 2/3rd gear shaft snapped. If it did, would it produce the symptoms above? Also, should I just take it to the dealer or can I do some investigate to confirm the circlip hunch? If me working on it possibly voids the warranty, I don't want to touch it.

Also, is there a way I can run the VIN to see if she is eligible for the circlip work or if it has been done?

Any advice is appreciated!
Dave.

Have a dealer run the vin and he can tell ya if it has been done or not. Or you can contact yamaha directly .also when a dealer does do the service, they are supposed to center punch a dot above the vin on the bike. but that doesn't always happen......

My dealer indicated in an attempt to urge me in to getting the recall work done that if you ignore the recall and failure occurs there is no warranty or free repair and the bill is now yours to pay.

Always make sure the bike is in neutral when hauling or transmission damage can Occur...

Thats bull! For one, how does Yamaha corp know that the owner received the notice? Once a owner sells the bike privately, there is no way for Yamaha corp to know. So how is a recall letter going to get to a 2nd or even a 3rd private owner. And believe it or not, there are still original owners that have not heard about the recall. Those are probably one's that have moved from when they first bought the bike, and even the post office will only forward mail for 1yr. 2nd recall was 2006, I had bike for 2yrs, bought thru dealer on consignment, I received recall letter only because I transferred the remaining YES warranty, now Yamaha corp had tracking of a new owner.
