I read in a thread recently that you can put a 1700 stater in a 1600 and that they were stronger. If so, is it an exact fit and is it true they are stronger?

Don't bother with a 1700 starter get a Warrior starter it fits but does not go all the way deep into the case. I shimmed mine with washers. To get the true benefit you need to upgrade your wires to #4 and get the warrior starter relay. Some of the guys have bought the Thunder Fire starters but you still need the wires and relay. My Warrior starter has been working great for 3 years now.

Curt usually rec's a hi perf 310cca battery (vs lower output stock 270cca battery) along with the HI trq starter/larger high perf battery cables/HD relay etc thats also a very good upgrade & likely overlooked it.

Must the be over 50 thing!!/LOL!!!

Just kidding with ya Curt!,i'm there too!!/LOL!!!!

Pasted below are a couple links to a high quality DEKA AGM-MAINT FREE-FACTORY ACTIVATED- HI PERF 310CCA BATTERY,1ST IS FOR $69. that's significnatly cheaper then getting the lower stock perf 270cca battery from a local auto parts store or bike shop @ approx 2x the cost that you more often then not have to fill with acid to activate and charg prior to use.2nd link is same batt mfg but is a few $ more but still a gret price at mid $70 range.

stator...I am having charging issues. I might try one of the 32 amp HD modified from Motogirls, however, i am on my way in this morning for them to check out the entire system and based on my meager attempts, i think it may be the reg/relay.

i wouldn't go bigger than the stock 1700 stator, that would put a huge strain on the rectifier (witch you will need to upgrade the same time as stator)

I would not try that. There is only so much room (physically) for the stator, and should it not fit, most places do not accept returns on electrical stuff. The 1700 stator from an "05" and newer are 29amps, older units are 21amp. But you also must change the rec/reg to get the benefits of the stator. Without changing the rec/reg, there will be no benefit.
