Good news everybody! ...EBC Clutch Spring Arrived! 2 Years, 10 Months ago
It's finally here folks! Today I received the long awaited preproduction diaphragm clutch spring from EBC.

For those who haven't been following the other threads, EBC has had a clutch spring listed on many sites for some time now; unfortunately the manufacturer they contracted out to produce the springs used the wrong grade steel and they were too soft. Softer even than the stock Yamaha spring. So they've been waiting for months now on a new supplier to produce them.

Not long ago I was fortunate to speak with the EBC rep here in the US, who was kind enough to offer me a preproduction version to try out, in order to determine if the new spring is good enough for release. I don't know how much stiffer it is than the stock Yamaha spring, only that it's supposed to be better. So keep your fingers crossed, if this one works, then EBC will be one step closer to releasing them to the general public.

For the record, I don't work for EBC, I'm not a shop or independent testing facility, nor anything official like that, just a fellow Roadstar owner, who's been dealing with the same clutch spring issues as everyone else. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time when the rep made the offer. Any opinions I give here about the EBC spring is just that; so keep it in mind and I will try to be as objective and thorough as possible.

I plan to install it this weekend. Stay tuned to this space for further developments.

I've got a group ride tomorrow, so Sunday will be the install day. No data yet on the specs, I suppose that's why I get to play guinea pig. I guess as long as the clutch doesn't slip, and the handle doesn't require a Neanderthal's grip, then were OK.

Nice price on the new EBC clutch spring, hope it works out!

There's also another alt,it's a Yamaha speedstar hi perf clutch spring that's approx 20-25% stiffer/stronger then the stock R* spring thats been on the market for yrs now so should not have any issue.

The 20-25% more clamping power it sas should elimnate elutch slippage from ever happening again espcially for stock or moderately moded bikes without high compression pistons & or perf cams etc.

This spring is avail right now though at a higher cost($91) but is still much less then the Barnett clutch upgrade at $230-250 on avg.

Heres the info on it pasted below.

Actually, the Star Performance spring is no longer available. I tired purchasing one from 3 different sources, including the dealer and all said the same thing. That's how I ended up dealing with EBC. If you can find someone who still has some old inventory, let us know.

Scott-W,

I don't know where you were looking at the Barnett Clutch conversion at but $230-250 is waaay high.

$144 Phat Performance

$139 SS Custom Cycle

Sure they're both more than the EBC, but it has been available for quite some time and is proven to work properly. Sorry for the hijack, now back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Yah, $140 seems to be around what I've seen too.

...on a side note, going to go start on the install once I finish my coffee. Fingers crossed.
