What do I do with a flat tire in the middle of KS 6 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I do long distance rides, often from CO to VA. Both my bikes have spoked wheels and innertubes.

I have never had a flat, at least on a long distance trip.

So, what do I do when I walk out of the motel 6 in the morning and one of the my tires has a screw in it and she's flat? There are no tire shops around.

I have AAA and they cover towing my scoot. Do I call them? Do I carry a patch kit and attempt to fix it myself? Do I pump slime into it?

In summary, when doing long distance rides using inner tubes, what do I do when I get a flat?

Thanks in advance.

Dave.

You can put the Ride-On product in both tubes and hope for the best. They say it'll only seal up to a 1/8" hole in a tubed tire and then maybe only 50 or 60 percent of the time. The thing is you have to find the screw right away before it tears the tube in which case the Ride-On won't seal it.

I've heard of folks laying the bike on the side to get the wheel off but even then you'll have to find a way to break the bead.

Your best bet is to find some tubeless wheels or seal the spoke wheels then all you would need to do is pull the screw out and plug the hole.

Hey Dave
I always carry a Slime pump, and bottle of Slime for motorcycles with tubes. As long as you don't blow a tube, should be able to get it going. Make sure mark where screw was, and roll it to bottom, so Slime can fill it. The Slime will harden when comes out of tube/tire and hits the air. I replace tire and tube when I can. It's worked several times for me and others that I have helped out. the ones hard to fix are the ones that nail/screw come out before you can find the hole, in which case have to air up first, and hunt for the hole.

A small green slime pump and a can of fix a flat has saved me befire. Might not fix it but it will get you home. Mag -vs- spoke wheels? You may be able to plug a tire on a mag....but since a spoke rim has a tube... Your far less likely to have "blow out" since a tube would leak much slower than a gash in a tubeless tire giving you a chance (hopefully) of slowing down should it happen at speed. Sometimes I think if I ever do go to a mag...maybe id still run a tube in it if possible. Just my personal opinion.

call triple A and have them tow you too closest MC shop...if it were the mag wheels you could have it plugged and inflated and still driven to closest MC shop. Even when repaired I won't drive very long on a tire that had a hole repaired on it...

Thanks guys. A couple more questions:

1)Is there a concensus on what's better, ride on or slime

2)Is it safe to use a patched inner tube or should I carry spare inner tubes with me?

I've always heard the oposite is true....the tube deflates faster than tubeless. Regardless, I do prefer tubeless (mag, sealed spokes, etc.) for the ease of plugging. Been there before and was glad it was an option. I'm not a big fan of the fix-a-flat stuff but disparate times call for desperate measures. I'd use it if I had to.

I use ride-on but I've got tubeless. Slime makes a bigger mess.
A friend of mine had a flat along 36 in northern Kansas. Valve stem broke. So since that I always carry a spare valve stem and if I had tubes I'd carry a spare.

Great point. Half of my tire problems (including cars) have been valve stems.

I ordered some bottles of ride on from Amazon.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Dave.
