Synthetic Oil, again....... 6 Years, 3 Months ago
Hi all.

Hey, I don't mean to beat a dead horse here, but I want to make sure that:

1) I'm buying 1 gallon of 15w/40 Royal Purple synthetic oil (they only come in 1 gallon containers at the local parts store....the bike [- R* 2005 -] needs 4.3 quarts).

2) I'm .3 quarts short of filling the bike...so I had the parts dealer order one quart of 10w 40 Royal Purple synthetic.

Question: Is it "OK" to add .3 quarts of 10W/40 to the four quarts 15W/40? Or do I need to buy at least 2 gallons of 15W/40 @ $24 a gallon?

Thanks.

Hey X-Ray,
Your okay to blend the 10/40 with the 15/40. But, 4 quarts may be all you need. Most Roadstars, if you put the recomended 4.3 quarts in on an oil change with filter, you'll bring the oil level right up to the top of the hash marks. Too much oil, that you'll just blow out via the crank vent line off the back cylinder. As long as your between the hash marks on the dip stick, preferably not above the 1/2 way point, you're okay. 4.0 quarts is all I ever put in mine, and that puts the oil level about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way between the hash marks.

Ouch.....

I've been putting in 4.3 quarts on the last 2 changes and it goes all the way up to the top of the hash marks (when hot). Now, when it's 'stone cold,' then it is at the half way point on the hash marks.

I'm getting the synthetic oil tomorrow and I'll make the change on the weekend - I won't ride the bike until I change the oil......and I will try your 4 quart theory. On Saturday - I'll change the oil - start it up and ride it for 10 minutes, then I'll come back - wait for 3 minutes with the engine off - then I'll check the level (This is with an oil filter change, BTW).

I hope I haven't hurt the bike by running it on the very top part of the hash mark with the "manuel recommended" 4.3 quarts? I could have sworn that most people around here add 4.3 quarts of oil to their 2005 Roadstars, but maybe I'm mistaken.

Xray,

I got into a little bit of what you're into when I changed oil the first time. I put 4 quarts of Shell Rotella T 15-40 into my bike and checked it while it was cold. Oil wasn't even on the dip stick! So I added about a third of a fifth quart and then could see the oil on the stick. Later two things happened. The first is that one of my riding buddies said it smelled like I was burning oil. With less than 5000 miles on the bike, I sure hoped that wasn't the case. With further reading I discovered you're supposed to check the oil when it's hot or at least after a ride. When I did that, the oil was way up at the top of the stick. I siphoned the excess oil out of my bike and got it down to where the level was midway between the two marks when warm. Oil smell magically went away! I've read some posts here and on the the RS forum that too much oil may well be a contributor to the "sticky valve" problem a lot of folks have had. I'm not sure if that's the case or not but I'd just as soon not find out the hard way!

Good luck to you!

Thanks for the advice pday.

Hey, can anyone tell me if it's ok to use the "Royal Purple Synthetic Oil 15W/40" in the 'Automotive / Diesel synthetic oil' brand of Royal Purple (I hope that made sense)? I've noticed on the "Royal Purple" website that they recommend "Max-cycle" brand synthetic oil for street bikes. I bought the Royal Purple synthetic oil that says "Automotive / Diesel" brand synthetic. I've got to wonder if I should return the Royal Purple synthetic 'automotive' brand oil and go ahead and order the Max-cycle brand. Any advice or should I stick with the kind I bought?

If you go to the home page of this wonderful website, they have an article on "How to change your oil at home" - in that article, Mongo tells us that he uses Royal Purple 20W/50, but he does not mention if it is "Max-Cycle" brand or not.

Thanks

X-Ray

The Max brand may have additives for the clutch were as the automotive type may not.
I would contact Royal Purple.

Post edited by: krb, at: 2006/02/14 08:38
