Brake Bleeding 6 Years, 3 Months ago
I'm new to this site so I don't even know if I am posting this in the right place, but here goes.
I recently had to detach my rear brake line and in spite of everything I did get air into the line and had to bleed the brakes. Isn't this supposed to be relatively easy? I bled, and bled, and bled and after about 45 minutes managed to get SOME pedal back but it is still very soft. Can anyone tell me what it takes to get a full pedal back on the brake?

Good to meet you, Rev-it. There are a number of discussion threads in the forum on this site under "Technical Discussions" that talk about bleeding brake lines. You may want to take a look there as some of the old pros like DocShadow and Odo have given some pretty good info in reply to questions like yours.

Again, welcome to the site and hope this info is helpful.

There are a number of tools that you can buy to help you out. Check out you local automobile parts store if you wish to go this way.

There is also the speedbleeder which looks like the bleeding nipple except a bit longer. It's worth the money if you're doing it alone.

If you want to do it without the 'tools' then just depress the lever, open the nipple until air or fluid come out. Repeat until the lever is still. Make sure you don't run out of fluid during this process or you'll inject more air into the system.

If you have problems, try tapping the line and caliper with the plastic end of a screwdriver; sometimes some air bubbles just 'don't wanna come'.

Good luck and welcome to the Clinic.

Doc

make sure you hold down the pedal while you have the bleeder open! I usually pump the brake 3- 4 times hold down with pressure, open the bleeder, allow the fluid to come out, and close the bleeder before the pedal hits the bottom.. if you do hit the bottom, no problem just don't let up until the bleeder is closed... also make sure the master cylinder is full of fluid, nothing worse than to go through the process of bleeding your brakes and then run out of fluid in the reservoir ~Dave

I do want to thank you guys for the info on brake bleeding. I have been away from my computer for several days and haven't been able to responde. I just bought my Roadstar last year (it's an 02' and I have been trying to buy up some goodies during the winter so I will probably be back several times for additional info. I got into the brake bleeding trouble when I changed out my pipes.
I really am glad to have found this forum with so much help available from all you roadies. It's good to know you guys are there for us who are not as up on things as I used to be.
