Project Bike 5 Months, 1 Week ago
I am thinking of getting a project bike to ward off the boredom this winter.

There is an 83 Yamaha 750 maxim on craigs list, have any of you owned these bikes?

Know there's a few members here who've had them. They'll pipe up soon enough.

You might want to look for an XS650(1980-1983 preferably). 1970-1979 are still good (I have a 79), but you'd probably have to upgrade to electronic ignition, etc..
1. There's a TON of aftermarket for customization.
2. There's a TON of enthusiast sites for ideas/tech articles/etc..

Just a thought.

I had a 1985 Midnight Maxim 750. Nice bike for the year. Had some great technology for being the first midsized four cylinder that Yamaha used. They do have cam chain problems and piston slap issues that start around 30k or 40k so watch out for those issues. You will hear a slapping noise in the engine while running. If the cam chain issue is caught early you can just replace the cam chain tensioner and keep going. There top mileage is around 70k or 80k miles so if it is close to this the engine is usually ready for a rebuild.

I'll look around for one, so far I haven't gotten an answer to my e-mail about the Maxim.

If I can find one at the right price, I either want to chop it or do a bobber or even a sort of a Mad Max rat bike.
At any rate it won't resemble the stock bike. I did a cb900 last winter and had it sold before I finished the bike.
I had to hurry on the bike because it was taking up my shop space and that took all the fun out of it.

This time I have I will have a place to put it while I work on it.

My first bike was a 81 maxim 750. Bought it for $600 and learned to ride on it, then sold it to a buddy and he did the same thing with it. Eventually it moved on to someone else for the same thing. That was about 4 years ago and it wasn't exactly in mint condition when I got it. That said it was great for what it was, probably a bit faster then what I needed but try telling that to a 19 year old. Never had any problems out of it that I didn't cause myself (it also the only bike I even laid over... we went in the grass.) It would be fun to play with one that had been taken care of, mine was kind beat. Best of luck on whatever project you find.

the v star 650 seems like a perfect platform to build a bobber from, hardtail look with comfort. there cheap to buy, strip it and sell the acessories, minimal fab work, rattle can paint job and you have a rat bobber. mort
