You should always run a filter no matter what. If your pumpless the filter should be inline right there close to the petcock. You don't need a kit just a good inline fuel filter.

1. You need a filter so contaniments wont clog the carb.
2. You can find one at any auto parts store.
3. When you install it, make sure it is mounted with a verticle angle to it so an air bubble can't get trapped in it.

My pump failed on me on the road. Gravity hasn't failed me yet!

Plus it opens up the jugs so it looks better IMHO and I haven't had a case of 'carb puke' since.

The stock petcock flows just fine for the 42 carb. Don't waste your money on a Pingel. Suggest to vent the gas cap though. When I fill-up, I'm below the top about 2 inches and have yet to have gas come out of the vented cap. I have not used a fuel filter since I installed the 42 5yrs ago (100k) I have never had an issue of clogging the jets. Just run the fuel line over the manifold and under the engine stay brkt. If you want to use a filter, make sure it is a hi-flow. The inside of the petcock has a mesh screen and the gas inlet on the carb has a screen too.
